Chronograph Second problems?

Recommended Posts

Have a seiko 6139-7060 i have done some work on. Have changed the case and mounted a new crystal. But i am having trouble with the chronograph hand . It should sit straight up when it's not running? But when i try to put it there it keeps slipping back into the same postition.  3 seconds pass 12 . Every time it's the same. I have give up for now. Have a nicely made tool for mounting the movement and press on the buttons. From VTA in Australia.  Have any suggestions what to do with my little problem?  Even if i get it right on the spot . It keeps sliding back when i press the hand on to make sure it sits alright on the pivot. Pictures will come.

Hello there, The Center Chrono wheel has a "D" shape to it A flat side and the pipe of the seconds hand also has a matching "D"  So it only presses on one way. Hope this helps.

Okedoki. No wonder i couldn't press it on i the right place?  Then the problem must be further down in to the movement ? What shall i do to correct it?

I am no expert...But it has been brought to my attention that the Center Chronograph Wheels fail and need replacement along with a new seconds hand as resetting will toss the hand about if it is worn and ill fitting( The Cannon/Pipe on the hand sometimes cracks or gets mis-shaped) I wish I could help more. Have you done a service on the movement ?

No service as it should have been done when i bought it? I bought it as a functional watch but with the wrong case and crystal? Since then i have bought two used cases a new crystal and the little gear that turns the inner bezel. But haven't serviced the movement yet.

But i have heard of the problem with the cracked wheel and pinion.

going from memory here......i believe that the there is wear on an inner mechanism that causes this. i thought that it was the vertical clutch that is worn out. that causes the hand to NOT center upon using the chrono.

Agree, I have had this on a few occasions, it drove me crazy as I was going over and over thinking it was a hand/tbu issue, but turned out it was wear to the reset hammer.

I am thinking of buying a new second chronograph hand i yellow or white. If i can find one that is? I have had so much to do the last few days that i haven't looked at it. But have read a little about it. Turn out that Seiko did this to prevent the hand from slipping and changing the position when you pressed the reset button.

If you cant find the correct style in the colour you like, you could consider painting the hand.  I have spent a few weeks perfecting this, its not easy, but once you get the right balance, etching, so the paint will take, and of course the right paint mixture, its then easier.

Hello, so nice to hear that you have developed a technique to paint hands. I remember when I was painting soldiers and pilots from WW2 when they was like 10 mm high. Those where the times, and I dident had to use glasses....

Another thing, I have this watch that have rather bad hands, and Im woundering what to do?  see photo...Can them be nickelplated ?? Do you know??

You would be best to try and source a NOS handset for that Seiko, thewatchsite specialises in Seiko, and Citizen, so try your luck on there if the bay doesn't yield any results.

Thanks, Il try that...
