How to hold a Jacot tool burnisher

Recommended Posts

This video demonstrates how to hold a burnisher comfortably, safely, and efficiently for burnishing a wheel pivot in a Jacot tool—a huge thank you to @nickelsilver, who generously shared this information. I can’t thank you enough! 🙂👍

It's different for me and others who are left handed.

Can't you just rotate the Jacot tool 180° (work on the other side of it) and get yourself a burnisher for left-handed people, for example, the Bergeon 2933D? Perhaps that is what is different or am I missing something? In the video, I do mention there are two types of burnishers for those who are either left-handed or right-handed.

We had a young guy in (many years ago..) who wanted to change careers from photography to watchmaking. He worked out an arrangement with my boss at the time to work as a sort of apprentice, for a small wage.

Boss wanted him to learn filing, as one does, so showed him how to hold the file, how to make proper strokes- this was a "full size" file, mind you, all that. Gave him some parts that needed a few licks here and there (like deburring on large stuff) and left him to it. Came back 30m later and all parts were destroyed. What the?!

Boss: "Please show me how you did this"

Kid: (starts filing wildly)

Boss: "That is not at all how I showed you!"

Kid: "But you're right handed- I'm a lefty!"

It definitely wasn't an issue of which-handedness. Ended up he couldn't follow instruction on anything. He didn't last long. And that boss was an absolutely marvelous teacher, very methodical , descriptive, and always demonstrated exactly how it should be done.

Side note: One of the best pivoteurs I know is a lefty. But he actually uses the Jacot with burnisher in the right hand. You guys are a weird bunch.

I've considered myself being pretty ambidextrous with my tools, working up a ladder you need to be able reach around and work from both sides of a ladder. After 40 years i can play a tune with a panel saw, can i use it in my left hand ? Can i fook 🤣

I'm multi-handed, not quite the same thing as ambitious, does that make me weirder still?

    • Couple of Oris in there , early Oris were pretty small , around 28mm , the first 2 could be 45x or 49x series calibers. The Unicorn might also be an Oris, to know that these will be pin pallet watches if there is no jewel count on the dial. The other 3 will be much the same. The Oris are ok and have some value, as far as pin pallets go Oris were very good as thats all they were allowed to work with for a long time, so they made sure they got the best out of them. Its good to inside though, at the most basic level of inspection of an Ebay sale at least you can see if anything is missing inside, otherwise its just pure luck. Ask the sell if he will add some pictures of the insde for you to privately look at.
    • What I've found with Facebook groups and yes i am in a few , its good to have more than one source of information on specialised areas such as lathe restoration or just military watches etc. They dont have the same ethics that we have here, we all seem to look out for each other here, a good close knit group that encourage new members and each other daily. We have a laugh sometimes and really help each other out and support each other. All the support i received about my mum was so kind, i wouldn't have got that anywhere else. A lot of these facebook groups are full of aholes and sarcastic gate keepers. I consider our forum to be very unique, but the subject of # if it ever Dissappears # honestly i think does need addressing . We're really just after a connection site Michael not a full function chat group. Just a way to re-connect if something happens. But the other big thing is all the stored information how that can remain accessible.
    • Facebook is a big NO from me. I have nothing to do with any of these sorts of places.
    • I for one would have to pass, I'm not joining Facebook.
    • Thank you for your introduction and welcome to this friendly forum. We all look forward to your contributions and continued involvement.  This might be helpful for you.  704789946_TZIllustratedGlossary(2).pdf
