ETA 2472 Sweep Second Wheel Is Getting Stuck

Recommended Posts

Hello dear community!

First of all I have to say some thankfull words, because it's really nice to have a place where you can find answers even without asking questions. But time has come.

I'm working on Dugena 1008 (ETA 2472) movement and faced with a problem: when the Sweep Second Wheel is installed (no matter a new one [I had some] or an old one [from this exact movement]) it's getting stuck all the train of wheels.

Everthing is clean and shines like a diamond. During visial inspection I haven't found any noticable issues: jewels are intact, pivots are okay. At least under 10x magnification. Yeah, I don't have a microscope.

I recorded two videos in order to demonstrate and very sorry for its quality, but at least it can illustrate you (I hope) what is happening.

Sweep second wheel isn't installed, bridge got tight and wheels are spining freely:

Sweep second wheel is install and train doesn't spin at all when bridge is tightly (under first resistance) fixed by screws and starts to spin a bit when screws are untighted:

So, I can only thank you in advance. 😀

Welcome to the forum, enjoy. Looking the vids there is something binding ie the first vid shows the wheels moving but not freely.. At a guess a bent pivot.

Thank you @clockboy!

The thing is that the all wheels in the train on video (I have a replacements for all of them, except the escape wheel) are new 🙃

But I will recheck.

try each wheel separately with a blower and check for freeness, that should give you some indication of what is the issue, check inshake and pinions for straightness, scoring, trash in the pinions/teeth [not meshing well], that model may have a bent post/tube that the second wheel passes through also.....

Do You know what is axial free play, how to check it and judge it is OK or not?

Seems that the sweep second wheel has no (axial) free play. This probably means that the stone above the wheel has shifted. The stone has hole, but it is not real hole jewel. It is rather a axial jewel for both 2nd ant 4rth wheels and can shift when the minute hand is pressed. First of all, take off the 2nd wheel bridge and look at the stone I speak about. I guess You will need to press it until it goes down and it's surface is level with the bridge. Then, put the bridge back and check if the 2nd wheel turns free and axial play is not too much. Then put (only) the 4th wheel and again, see if there is some free play and turns free. Enlarging free play of 4th wheel leads to decreasing free play of 2nd and wice versa. So, by shifting the stone, You must ensure the both wheels feel good

Hello gents and thank you all!

But the main prize goes to @CYCLOPS.

Yes, there was no endshake for sweep second wheel, but reason was a bent tube. I could notice this only on specific angle during slooowly rotation of the main plate.

Spent some time with staking tool set and got this:
