Watch running fast after rebuild including changing balance cock/wheel

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I just finished rebuilding my watch (first one), and everything is working fine, except the watch is running very fast. Takes about 45 seconds for the second hand to go around. The watch is a Tissot ETA-2846 movement.

I replaced the whole balance cock/wheel/spring with a new one during the rebuild.

Is it likely I just need to adjust the balance spring?

I tried demagnetizing the watch but didn't make any difference.

The attached photo is the balance. Would I just move the gold colour adjuster anti-clockwise to lengthen the balance spring?

Also, what does the screw next to the +/- do? It didn't seem to make any noticable difference.

Thanks

Lee

Are you sure the new balance complete has the ferquency your watch needs ?

Aparently the new balance complete is  28800 beater whereas your watch needs a 21600 beater,

21600÷ 28800= .75

45÷60= .75

Maybe a little more detail here? The reason I ask is often times Tissot isn't exactly the same it's possibly been modified or changed so is that the number under the balance wheel engraved on the main plate? Then sometimes you get like a -2 after the caliber number and of course that will change things.

Then out of curiosity why was that done what happened to the original one? Plus we do like pictures but pictures of the balance wheel out of the watch Are not helpful in that the problem is the balance wheel in the watch. So for instance the picture you have you definitely have problems as they hairspring isn't properly centered it looks like it's touching that would make it run fast so we need a picture the balance wheel in the watch so we can see where they hairspring is and if adjustments have to be made or not.

thanks @Nucejoe

That is exactly it. My mistake. I bought a complete balance for 2836 because I couldn't find one for 2846 (as per my previous thread, I damaged a chaton and bought a whole new balance as a I couldn't find the chaton on its own). I thought that most of the parts were the same across 2836 and 2846, but I guess I was wrong at least on this one.

I found these pages now, which confirms that the beats are exactly as you say, so explains the 45 seconds vs 1 minute.

Is the chaton in the new 2836 balance likely to be the same as in the 2846 so I could put the old balance wheel back on with the chaton from the new balance?

Thanks

Lee

I have a link to where you can find a parts list for each of your watches. Then you can click on the part that you're interested in and it will cross reference with all the watches that have the same part.

Notice, Dr ranfft lists  11.5 "'  for both eta 2836 and 2846 , based on which I say yes chatons are the same for both calibers.

 Hi Lee,

Base movement of ETA 2824 and 2836 are entirely interchangeable, and both calibers are most common of ETA's , so your next project can be either of said calibers in need of balance complete.

Thanks, @Nucejoe.  Might wait a little while until I embark on the next one, but good idea!

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a quick reply to let everyone know that I managed to get a used 2846 balance and finally finished rebuilding the watch yesterday. Seems to be running pretty perfectly at the moment. I still need to measure it properly and maybe make some minor adjustment, but it was still on the correct minute after running for a day or more.

On to the next one!

Thanks for all your help!

Lee

    • Just picked this up earlier today. This find just about epitomizes vintage watch collecting for me and what really keeps me going. Hit 2 antique malls today and saw a couple of pieces at the first one but just nothing that I needed. At the second one saw a Accutron 218 but it was 20 minutes behind the actual time. These "malls" have numerous booths of a variety of sellers who likely go in once or twice a week. Considering that that watch should be within a couple of seconds a month, I figured it hadn't been phased so passed on that for now knowing it would need work to run correctly and the price tag. Then I found this Excelle in a display case. I never heard of the brand, but in was an auto and had a little heft. It turned out to be 40mm lug to lug, 35.3mm case width, and 12.3 mm thick. On the spiedel once size fits most flex band. At $10.80US with tax I immediately pulled the trigger with nothing to lose. Before pictures: I spent a nice 30 minutes taking it out of the case and running that through the ultra sonic replacing the crystal and gasket and recasing, but spent five minutes first getting it running close on the timegrapher. Had a new crystal already in stock. I probably could have sanbed and polished the old one, but for $3 there is nothing like a new acrylic that makes a watch pop, in my opinion. The caseback gasket was hardened and just glad it wasn't tar. Changed that as well. Here is the after Pic on a temp black strap while I decide on a leather or steel bracelet. An added bonus was doing some research and finding out the Elgin connection and the movement is a PUW 1563T which is German I am pretty sure and probably why it doesn't say Swiss made on the dial. This movement is supposed to have a hack feature and quickset date by pushing the crown. But neither of those complications seem to be working. Not sure if the stem is cut too short because there is no gap for the crown to move. Either way at some point will need to be serviced and check the keyless works to find out what is going on with the quickset and hack of the sweep second hand.
    • On the link that I posted, one of the watches has no crown and another has a crown that is not square to the case. Does a broken crown signify that the movement may be quite corroded, hence the stem has broken, and does the bent crown simply signify that the stem is bent? Unfortunately as the seller has a bid on the items, he is now reticent to prise the casebacks off in case he damages something. The seller did reply with this email though. Hi again Michael - brief descriptions; Oris x 2, dials and hands ok and they set ok and one I just wound and it has been running for a few of minutes as I write this response. Rocar, dial ok no crown. No name dial no good and can't pull crown out to set. Roma dial and hands ok, I think it is pin pallet movement. Unicorn, good dial and hands and plexiglass ok for age. All cases and plexiglasses show wear except as mentioned. I have no idea what movements are fitted or condition so please if you do consider bidding, please do so accordingly as I don't like to disappoint my customers - regards and thanks again for your interest - Jim
