1980s Caravelle/Bulova Mechanical Watch Stopped Working Abruptly

Recommended Posts

I'm very new to watch repair and I found this caravelle mechanical watch. The watch face says Caravelle but the band says bulova and online I've seen it referred to as both. It's mechanical and I took it apart and cleaned it. It worked perfectly for a week and randomly stopped working. I it apart and the it will work when I hold it at specific angles and sometimes will only work for a minute then stop. Any ideas what may have caused it to break, what could be wrong, and how to fix it? I've attached pictures below.

Hello and welcome.  The name on the dial and the movement manufacturer are two different things.  Your watch has a Bulova movie, the caliber should be under the balance.  If not measure the length and the width and we probably can help you. I suspect a broken pivot on the balance but we need more information.

Caravelle, a sub brand of Bulova, have some watches with the same caliber but the caliber number is different. For example, the Caravelle 11DP is the same as the Bulova 1041.10. I'm not 100% on the last two digits on this caliber but it looks like it could be 1000.30, which is a Bulova Caliber. The balance complete for the 1000.30 interchanges with a number of Caravelle calibers (eg, 1000.61).  So it could be that someone just swapped in the Bulova 1000.30 as it may interchange 100% with one of the linked Caravelle calibers.

What cleaning solution did you use to clean the fork/pallets with?

See if fork pallets are loose, if one palete is unlevel with the other.

Lift one side of the balance rim with an oiler while you observe the balance pivots, do this in dial up and dial down positions, does balance pivot jump out of the setting's jewel hole?

Check if the jewels/ chatons are loose inside jewel housing.

Welcome to this forum.
