I just noticed a nice looking Platax on the Bay. I don’t need one now, but every time one comes up for sale I watch it. This one has a punch that looks a little strange. It's the top left one in the third photo. Does that look like it belongs? There's nothing in the picture on the box that matches it.

Cousins still offer the two smaller removing punches (Bergeon name), they they call them: heeled bush holes. the 1.10mm is in stock and the 0.90mm is suposedly available on the 14th Sept, but I wouldn't rely on that. I wonder which one is missing?

Sorry, Don, after looking again at the Platax tool on eBay, I now can see all three removing punches (they occupy different positions than in my Platax and I stupidly assumed that one was missing). What seems to be missing from the position occupied by the strange punch is the Reducing Sleeve, 2677.3A . But this may well be already installed in the Platax body. If so, then this would be a fine buy as you would have a full Platax set plus the little punch. If the sleeve is missing it could easily be made up out of brass stock - unfortunately Cousins list it as obsolete!

I agree with Colin and Geo, this is not a complete set of punches.

Be patient my friend, a complete set in good condition will come up for sale ... but when it does mate, be sure to pull the trigger on it, as they don't stay up for sale long.

 

Took me about 7 months to find mine, and it came up at the most inconvenient time ... right when I'd saved enough money to buy a Horia 7750-53 Movement holder :rolleyes: so typical.

 

Just as a reference image, this is what you are looking for Don.

I'd still bet money the part is in the tool. Send the seller a message and ask them to unscrew the retaining cap to see if it is there. Even is it is missing, as Colin said in a previous post, it would be really easy to make one.

The biggest problem usually, is the punches can have broken pivots or debris jammed in the ends. If this is the case it is virtually impossible to remove. I was lucky with mine, only one punch was blocked, but I managed to vibrate the pinion out using intense ultrasonic cleaning.

If you do manage to get one, it is a good idea to make a set of plastic caps to fit over the punches when they are not in use. The tips are so fine, that dropping them onto a wood or laminate floor can end up blocking them.

Interesting. Thanks, Colin. As I wrote in the OP, I always watch these when they come up for sale, even though I don't need one. The reason is because they are so rare and if someday I do want/need one I may not be able to find it. Granted, that's probably not a great reason to buy a very expensive item. On the other hand, is there a better, safer method of removing a balance staff that doesn't necessitate having a lathe?

 

Does anyone know anything about this Bergeon punch?

Hi, thought I'd post here to avoid creating more Platax threads:

Can anyone tell me how to best select the correct "catch" / "heeled base" for a given balance assembly and also which punch to use?

I presume you got with the smallest that will fit in each case, but I thought I'd better ask first. My set only has the 0.9mm and 1.0mm heeled bases.

      Same show.different vendor. $1US plus battery and polished the crystal and wiped the case. Added the spring bars and strap, which has a small cut that needs glue.  This one has a hatch to change the battery and hand setting and hack crown is on the back! Rubber strap replaced with the brown leather with the cut.

      Hi All, I started this forum over 10 years ago and never intended for it to me a 'for profit' concern. Since then, I launched an online course and I draw funds from that business in order to fund this website. There is also a little bit of funding from Google ads but I don't rely on it because they keep changing the goalposts. The forum costs a few hundred pounds per month to run and Im comfortably managing it. Why a few hundred pounds? I am OCD about backups and not relying on a single company to host those backups, I use amazon S3 to backup hourly and daily, I also use Digital Ocean. I use a separate mail service to handle the serious amounts of emails sent from the site, I am on here most days admin'ing and updating the site or servers/applying security patches and the like - its not a big deal, I enjoy it. In short - you might not see me a lot posting (for my sanity as it's addictive (same on all my social media)) but I certainly do a lot behind the scenes. I can't control my mortality and so there's always that - but other than that, I'm damn committed to this site as I am committed to my commercial site watchfix.com which supports this site. I have no interest in shutting down, selling or otherwise changing this sites format. Having said that, if anyone wants to consider taking on moderation tasks to help (in particular, making sure people post in the correct place and moderating new members posts) that would be very helpful. (Only members who have been active for more than a year please). Finally, thanks very much for your support and kind words - I truly appreciate that. This forum has to be one of the friendliest I am part of - a massive refreshment after reading some of the Facebook groups I'm part of - except mine FB group - that's also great with great people 😄😉

      Demagnetize it first and the tools you are using. Get yourself a tin of  Ronsonol lighter fluid. A small jar with a screw on lid. Put the balance in that for a few minutes, get some tissue paper put the balance on that then dry with you bench blower, oil both staff pivots and put it back in the movement. This is what I always used to do never had any problems. I have tried one dip and it was rubbish a waste of money. Ronsonol is very friendly to shellac so no worries there.

      Thats not the issue Sam, the forum is very popular and well known among in the watch world. The issue is anything can change at any time, my life and anyone else's could be changed dramatically in an instant, mine just has which partly prompted the start of the this thread.

      Thanks for your feedback guys. I gave the watch (what I consider to be) a full wind and will check the power reserve. I think the last time I tried, it ran for at least 48 hours so this will take a while. As the watch IS running I think the arbor IS attached to the main spring. I was suspecting that maybe the main spring is slipping inside the barrel much like it would in an automatic watch.
