IHi everyone, I’m Rob.

Big thanks to Mark for his big positive impact on learning.

My interest in watch repair began with some inherited watches that need repairs. I watched a bunch of Mark’s videos and have torn down and rebuilt a few cheap or free watches from local giveaway groups and yard sales. But until I have  successfully dismantled and reassembled similar watches without mangling them, I’ve limited myself to cleaning and diagnosing the heirloom pieces. I plan to eventually acquire a staking set, Seitz or Horia tool for rejewelling, a mainspring winder or two, and maybe a Jacot tool - but these will all require negotiation with the purse holder.

Looking forward to contributing and learning here.

Cheers,

Rob

Welcome aboard!!  Sounds like you are serious!!  Will be fun to watch your growth.

I, too, am an amateur (son of a watchmaker) and have been learning from this great group now for a little over two years!!

Just last week started learning to use the Jacot.  Fun stuff!

Thanks, LWS. I’ve gotten by so far with a fairly minimal investment, i.e. a set of Bergeon screwdrivers, cushion, movement holder, oilers, cups and oils. This is enough to service a watch, and I might try replacing an impulse jewel, but it seems a staking set is a must to replace a balance staff. Some forums say there isn’t much point in adjusting until the pivots are straight and polished and everything properly oiled - so a Jacot tool will have to go on my next birthday wish list.

Best of luck,

Rob

Indeed, a staking set is a must. Even if not replacing staffs, when reinstalling a hairspring after poising a balance wheel...hard to be without one.
