Hi all from Nova Scotia.

made the mistake of watching Marshall on the watch restoration channel on YouTube.

i found it relaxing and fascinating. I am hooked and just starting to look for tools and practice watches. I intend to try for pocket watches on Ebay to start.
Good to meet you all.

Thank you guys.

I seem to have signed myself up to a really expensive hobby. I have an addiction to buying watches. Started off buying one or two to start. Now I want them all!
can’t resist bidding on the ones I like. Seems I have a good eye. I only collect antique pocket watches.

Thanks for the intro @NovaScotiaPete welcome to the WRT forum! I'm also relatively new and I'm in the middle of my first service of an Elgin Grade 313 movement which has been stalled for a while as I was waiting for oil and a mainspring winder. Well, my oil arrived today and luckily I picked up an identical 2nd movement so as I disassemble that one it will help me remember how to re-assemble the first one! I've posted some shots of my watches here.

Yep, watching those YouTube guys got me too 🙂

Thank you guys. Sorry about the delay responding.

grsnovi I know exactly what you mean. I think it’s kinda scary thinking about reassembly. I took loads of photos of the one I currently have in pieces. Waiting so long for parts and stuff coming.

I never did get my first Elgin running (for long). I did get it going but thought I could do better and it went down hill. Note that even if you have a second movement of the same grade you may find that certain components differ - the only way to know this is if you can either inspect the component yourself in exact detail and know that it is an exact copy of the one you want to replace (often not possible if the one you need to replace is worn or broken) or if you have access to an Elgin Material Catalogue which will often have a note regarding variations of a part.

You can likely get a new mainspring to replace a worn or broken one but good luck finding other parts (other than from a donor movement).
