Hi All,

Struggling to find the correct mainspring to use for my Omega 286 I purchased GR4197 but the arbor is too small for the hole in it. Now I have purchased GR4227 as i was advised it is the same as the 260 but does anybody know if this is correct?

Im stuck for ideas as the GR manual also says the GR4197 will fit.

I have encountered this issue before, sorry I can not remember the caliber. How ever I closed the spring to fit the arbour. To still maintain the correct shape I gently bent the springs inner curve around a slightly smaller round object that the circumference of the arbour. Sorry to be so vague but it was a few years ago. My advice is to fit the correct spring and only move away from this if it is an absolutely necessary.

I'm afraid I think the GR4227 will be too strong as it is 0.14 as opposed to the 0.13 of the (correct) GR4197.

You need to carefully open the hooked end where the arbor fits. Hold the arbor in a pin vice if you are struggling to insert it, and twist as it goes in to force the spring to open.

This issue is exactly the opposite, the spring is too loose around the arbor

Gotcha. Do you have a set of round-nosed pliers? You can usually use these to grip near the end and form it into a smaller radius.

Whether too big or small, I'll just add that heating the pliers until to hot to handle (the tips) in an alcohol flame helps immensely.  Nivaflex (blue ring from GR) hates being bent to deformation, unless hot. Inox (stainless, from GR red ring) is more accepting to some bending. Work quickly and reheat often for the former- and for the latter as well.
