I would like to thank @Poljot and @jdrichard for the measurements, pics, and info.  I recently picked up a K&D No. 50 that was complete and in great shape *except* for the stake.  I remembered I had a couple old chipped stakes socked away, so I decided to turn one down a bit on my lathe, and replicate the tip as depicted.  With your help I was able to create an accurate facsimile.  Thanks again, fellows!

Hey, thanks for the thanks:)

I got to thinking also: between my lathe and my taps and dies, I could make not only other sizes of stake, but different sized barrels to fit the tool.  With a little work, and some careful measurements, I could turn this into a tool *set*.  I've been taking on a bit more wristwatch work (where before it was mostly pocket watches that the antique dealer needed me to fix) and in expanding my horizons, I've also needed to expand my set of tools.

Yessir. Welcome to the world of the machinist. I've been doing it since I took my first shop class 1977 as a kid. My dad too, before me. Watchmakers, repairmen and machinists are cut from the same cloth I think. Sky's the limit. Good luck and be sure to post for the rest of us to check out.
