So, I'm seeing two stake-sets (or maybe punch-sets) mounted in a central sphere.  Why a sphere, instead of a disc or cross-shape?  And why is there at least one stump with a concave depression that seems to match the curve of the "multi-stakes"?  The only clocks I've seen with anything spherical are those anniversary clocks with the rotating globe-type weights/pendulum.  Is this for constructing or servicing those?  I rather doubt it, but I can't come up with any other use just yet.

Perhaps something for pocket watch case pendant holes?

I am certain it's one of the many tools that makes some job much easier, that you never knew existed...
