Jump Hour Lubrication

Me neither but I would say D5 and, where it should have finer oil, Moebius 9010 should do the trick...but those are some of the ones I always have at hand, so it is just me! Maybe another member can suggest the recommended one!

I don't recognize the movement....what is the movemnt of type of jump hour in the foto? I've done many baumgartner and Bettlach ebauches and this is what has worked for me:

Moebius 8300 oil for the mainspring
Moebius 9501 for crown wheel, stem, and winding mechanism
Moebius Microgliss D-5 oil for setting mechanism and keyless works
Moebius 9415 for the pallet and impulse
Moebius 9010 for drive wheels
 
Be careful not to put much oil on the dial side (if at all) because this has cause sticking problems for me in the past: particularly with Sicura spinning discs. I only oil the  hour/date  wheel spring and locking mechanisms--very little and nothing on the minute wheel.

The question about the lubrication doesn't refer to the normal movement parts, i.e., Balance Pivots, Wheel Pivots, Pallet Fork etc. My question deals with the Dial side parts that move the number wheels. The levers and the cam on the Canon Pinion. The first picture is a Dial-O-Rama with a Benrus FG25 movement. The second picture is from a Gruen Air Flight with a N510SS movement.

Yeah I live in Bushwick and grew up in the Bronx: The Concourse, Kingsbridge, Fordham Rd. and the Little Italy sections. I have not worked on Benrus, but they have number wheels so its not that different from other jump hours. For the levers that control the wheels I use a little Microgliss D5. I wouldn't oil any of the contact area of the  hour/minute wheels with dial side because the oils can actually induce adhesion between the two. For the cams I again use a small amount of D5 and it works perfectly. The Benrus has hour/minute/and second wheels, so this is very much like a Sicura and my oil suggestions should be fine. The Gruen Air Flight looks more like a traditional watch, and so I would treat the " jumping 24 hour" wheel as a date disc and simply oil the lever and the contact point between the disc and cam pinion. Be conservative in the oiling.  Post again when the watches are done!

A Benrus technical bulletin from the time (No. 102) says: "Do not lubricate any part of the disc mechanism. The cannon pinion ONLY is to be oiled in the usual manner."

Also, the spring in the Benrus should be riding on the outside of the copper cam wheel. Looks like it's sitting on top of the cam in the picture.

Yes this is corect and also my experience. I do not oil any part of the discs as I stated in my earlier reply to Spiro. I don't have any bulletoins to share, but I know from experience with Sicura jump hous watches that if you oil any of the discs, they will stick or drag in thier rotation. Only the cannon pinion is to be oiled.

    • I have two Seitz sets, one ancient (with the 3mm anvils) and one just old (with 4mm anvils) plus a collection of spare pushers of assorted vintage. Not one of them is marked with it's size. Something which I have found very irritating when I have been using the tool and not returning pushers to their correct place in the tray every time as it means that I have to get the calipers out and measure them. These were bought as sets and collectively I have over 100 pushers so it would seem highly unlikely (if not inconceivable) that they are all cheap knock offs, especially as they are old enough to pre-date the prevalence of the Chinese knock off industry (at least as applied to watch making tools). I therefore believe them to be original Seitz parts. And there is no numbering. The shape of the bottom of the pump pushers is the same as your photo. The only thing that may not be the same is that the slotted insert (looks like a screw but is in fact a bayonet) should be brass. Yours looks the same colour as the steel but that could just be the lighting.

    • I no longer have my set so I can't help anymore sorry. Many on here have the set as its a must have tool for watch making/ repair.
    • It needs to be stirred before use and that makes it feel a lot thinner than when in the bottle. Does it feel as thin as 9010 after stirring it? I guess not! Yes, it's strange! I don't know, but if it is on impact it would make sense.
    • Thanks, OH! I agree with you. I'm currently looking at them under magnification, and they are consistent in shape and form for each section (flat pushers, pump pushers, concave, reamers, etc.). Though, a few are in bad condition and need to be replaced.  Before I cancel the return I have already initiated on eBay, can any of our members check to see if there are inconsistencies in markings on their sets? Also, I have included a snapshot of the bottom of one of the pump pushers, which are very unique in shape.  Can someone tell me if the bottoms of their pump pushers match this photo?  I'm hoping that Seitz had some inconsistencies in manufacturing over the years regarding markings.  Crossing my fingers. I appreciate you guys. Frank
