I have just retired and not long SInce buried my father. He was a life long repairer of clocks and watches. Of course I have his stock to deal with which is sitting on my study floor

 I also have two clocks in an unfinished condition. Any advice for someone in my position

My condolences for your father.

I guess firstly what are your plans?

Do you want to learn watch and clock repair for a hobby, as you will obviously have all the tools, or do you just want to sell everything.

If you want to learn start watching Mark's videos on watch repair and get a couple of books and get some cheap basic second hand watches to practice on and single train clocks and start asking questions on the forum.

If you want to sell ebay is probably your best way to go, for parts sort out into groups and sell as lots, so tools do some research as the cheaper ones are probably better sold in lots, but the more expensive ones by themselves.

    welcome to the forum.  another Dad gone.  very sad.    I would put it all in storage for a year or so,  enjoy this forum and see if you want to collect or repair watches.   good luck,  vin

Sorry to hear of your loss.

Take some time and think of what you would like to do. Don't sell anything until you have made your mind up. You might regreat it.

Thanks for your kind thoughts. Yes time is a good healer and I can choose what I want to do. I will check out the videos I have started with radio repairs and cb radio route into Ham radio. Just not certain yet. Chris

      To start searching for hands, measure the diameter of the hour wheel where the hour hand attaches, and the tip of the cannon pinion where the minute hand attaches. Use calipers that are accurate to 0.01mm, and then you can look around ebay for hands about the right size. It is typical to have to either close down (concave punch) or broach open the pipe when fitting hands since you won't usually find a set that is the exact diameter of your hour wheel & cannon pinion. It is reasonable to work with something about +/- 0.03mm  Measure the thickness of the 4th wheel extended pivot for a seconds hand. Cousins does sell some new hands for pocket watches, but I don't find them suitable for old watches. They just don't look right so instead I managed to win an auction on an enormous assortment of old hands. It's sort of fun to pick through them and measure to find a workable pair.       I'm looking for hands (3) & a crystal (4cm dia.) for my watch Serial No. 85590 as shown in the photo. I'd be grateful for suggestions re potential sources; and to know if uv glue would be suitable for re-fixing the 12mm dia. seconds dial.

      Welcome to the forum, enjoy. The issue is watches that are sold as  waterproof are only valid if serviced and fitted with new gaskets fitted particularly those that are around the stems.A picture of the watch would be helpful for a better analysis..
