Fusee watch factory?

I've noticed that a lot of the fusee watch movements all appear very similar. Was that because there was a large fusee factory in the 1800's or was the "best design" simply copied by most watchmakers?

In fact it seems a lot of the Edwardian and Victorian movements were very similar with only superficial changes. Or am I barking up completely the wrong tree here?
