Seiko 6106-7589 In need of face transplant

Hello Forum,

I was attempting to clean a bit of crud off the face of my Seiko 6106-7589 with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab and was surprised to see that the alcohol dissolved the finish on the face. You can see the "white spot" at about the "10" position. I'm looking for recommendations to fix this error.

Is there a good source for a replacement face that would fit this watch? I doubt I could find a NOS face.

Another alternative would be to have the original face refinished or clean it all off to make it even.

I've attached a few pictures so that you can see the extent of the damage.

I've had a saved search on eBay looking for a good donor watch candidate. But, the problem with that is most are good watches worthy of keeping together or they are in such sad shape that the dial isn't good for transplant condition.

Keep an eye out on Thewatchcollector on ebay.
Sometimes Ramon has some nice donor watches that look like junk BUT a decent dial hides behind trashed crystals.



I have to ask....
What made you think it was ok to use what is essentially a solvent on a painted surface [emoji1] [emoji4] [emoji6]

I've just made a $10.00 eBay best offer on a 6106-7589 donor that is questionable, because I see a bit of rust or corrosion on the inside and the crystal is so trashed that you can't made a good assessment of the dial.

As for my error of cleaning the dial with alcohol, I wasn't thinking clearly. At first, it didn't seem to affect the dial. I though it was something on the level of anodized aluminum. It was only after I attempted a bit of scrubbing with a cotton swab on one particular spot that the finish was destroyed.

What is the approved solution for cleaning a dial?

There are some nice looking Seiko 6119s in good condition on eBay. But, I can't bring myself to cannibalize a good condition watch to fix my watch. If I see one that looks trashed, I may make an offer.

That is a nice looking dial. If it had silver accents, I'd accept your offer. Since my 6106 is basically a silver watch, I'm looking for a dial that will more closely match my original color scheme.

      I'm not convinced it is a chronometer, just because it says so on the dial.  I think the two springs was a misunderstanding.

      I recall a video on YT from Steffen Pahlow where he talks about getting himself a Chronometre (for which he paid more than he would have liked), but in his words "I had to. It is a Chronometre." I am wondering if you have more watch there than what you are aware of? Especially with what @Neverenoughwatches mentioned about two springs.

      If you are having counter tops ( i think thats the amercan term ) and some cupboards underneath where you dont require working legroom then that corner doesn't have to be a difficult access void. Lazy susans , we ( kitchen fitters ) call them cabinet carousels or you could just have two adjacent doors with a corner post fixed to one of them, though it does make for a long reach to get to the very corner. But a carousel is a good access solution, also there are sliding steel baskets available but these are bloody expensive and typically problematic, i really think they are a crap idea. What i like about fully fitted worktops, very tidy looking, no loss of space, and sidewards pinged parts are hopefully going to stay worktop side and not end up crunched on the floor.

      Aren't corners of rooms a bugger though as it is really difficult to use the space underneath the intersection of the two benchtops. Lazy Susans are an idea I suppose. Somewhere to be able to put tools/soldering iron/testing machines that aren't needed on the bench top all the time. It is a bit tight in there, but at least I won't have to move great distances to get to another area. I need to get hold of another chair to have at the cleaning bench. I'll stand all the time at the lathe and I already have the stool for the workbench. Need to get the power sorted now and move the LED lights for over the workbench. There are four downlight in the ceiling that are currently halogen bulbs. Really quite bright so that's good. Ceiling fan as well. What else could one hope for?
