Help Oiling New Movement

If I fit a brand new movement into case do I have to oil it first or will it be ok to use it straight out of the packet.

That depends where you got the movement from and how it was "marketed" for lack of a better word. Some come ready to swap and some require a full service before you do. What movement and how was it shipped are we talking about?

Hi bobm, it's an ETA 6498 which came from a private seller.

 

He said he had it intending to use it but never got round to it.

 

It was in a round plastic box which was purpose made to fit complete with the stem attached  and a plastic crown plus fixing screws and a dial washer.

 

It is untouched and as far as I can tell in its original supply packing.

If it is spotlessly clean and there is no evidence of dried oil, I would oil it and use it. If there is dried oil residue, strip it clean it and oil it before putting it into service.

What would help mostly would be to check it on the timegrapher. If it needs lubrication, the display will show that.
