Did you not read the posts upthread? You've made several comments to the effcet that you have, yet now I'm not so certain...

I decided to come back to this discussion and ask what is the problem that I'm having that you observe so I can perhaps learn from my mistakes?

Hiya John, apologies for not returning. I haven't made any progress  as yet.  The balance is still perched on the Luthy tool waiting for my attention.  Just been very busy at work and sorting out my home this past month. I promise i will come back and post an outcome and tg readings when i get around to shortening the hairspring and reforming the end curve.

John you know the place would and does fall apart without you, and of course the moderators. I noticed that last week. I can't answer questions, so I am happy to see you, even though it's very late for us.

what do you mean you don't answer questions how can that be?

Hehe, Just as not all that rhymes is poetry, not all words deposited here are answers. 😊

Well, certainly you don't mean me? If that is so, then it is your fault ultimately. After all, you fully corrupted me - a newbie and a girl - sniff, a girl being knocked about in the rough horo sea, adrift and alone. It's what we in America call a damned shame. And please, don't make @oldhippy have to come close this post, he has so much to do as it is.

Any more that is off topic that is not to do with the original thread and this will be closed.

You have been warned

Back to the original thread, trying to vibrate the balance this evening. 🤔 err, yeah not as easy as it sounds, but i am getting the hang of it. Waiting for my phone to charge so i can watch a video of the oscillations in slow mothion. Nigh on impossible to figure out which is fast and which is slow just by watching 🤨

Thanks oh, i gave up with trying a slow motion video, there seems to be too much video trailing to tell whats happening. Ive been watching it for about an hour now with just with a little bit of magnification and my brain is starting to kick in and see the syncing between the two balances. The closest i have managed to get is 16 matching oscillations before it syncs out. Counting them is an easy way to tell if you've gone too far shortening or lengthening the hairspring.

Back to the original thread,

actually it's hard to tell what the original thread is because the title doesn't reflect what the discussion is about. a suggestion in the future would be to appropriately title the discussion to reflect the subject of the discussion that helps people to find your discussion.

now you may be grasping my lack of enthusiasm for using a vibrating tool for purpose that it wasn't really intended for. The goal of vibrating a hairspring would be a replacement new hairspring in other words are starting off with a long spring you know where you stand versus here we're not sure. Then you have to keep moving the hairspring through the tweezers until you reach a time where your sample balance exactly stays in frequency with the master balance and as you can see it's a pain in the ass to get there. this is why when you look at is a video on YouTube of one of the modern schools they talk about keeping the old traditions alive. Like turning a staff between centers and doing all this hand filing manipulation keeping all the traditions alive. Then they get to the hairspring vibrating and they use an electronic Greiner machine and they do not do it with the old-fashioned vibrating tool I find that actually quite amusing. Even they grasp what a pain in the ass this tool lives. Oh and of course the other problem they have is the infinite supply of raw hairsprings that were once available to torture the students learning how to vibrated hairsprings is no longer available.

Thanks John.  About the title, i agree it was rather vague. Vibrating a hairspring really is a pain in the..... we say arse 😄. Its taken me two hours to find the active point and 22 oscillations in sync is the closest i can get. Going either way with the hairspring in the tweezer and the two balances start to sycn out sooner so i must be close. The reason i started this was to see if the hairspring was timed correctly to the balance wheel (  and to play with a toy )  My tg was showing 400 seconds slow. As it happens the hairspring is timed correctly, the active point was almost in the center of the original terminal curve. So its now reassembly and back to finding the actual cause of the slow rate. Another day now as its almost midnight in the Uk. Appreciate the input chaps John and OH.

yes playing with your new toy I don't suppose we could have a picture of your watch? Basically aiming down at the balance wheel assembly. As I have questions.

Yes i will do that in the next couple of days John. I look forward to you asking questions, me attempting to answer those questions, me asking my own questions and you accurately answering those question. We have an expert to numbnut relationship John, i will let you workout who is the expert between us . 😄.

Come on John give me a smile buddy, you know you want to 🙂

    • At some stage you will have to jump in and have a go.
    • Ah so its you thats buying up all the DD calibres 🤨.
    • Hi Richard,  I keep buying CAL.59 movements to practice on 🙂 Not started yet though, I'm gathering tools and building my confidence to start.
    • Problem solved. For some bizarre reason, the hook on the wall of this barrel is not properly centered vertically, but is oddly high on the wall, maybe 3/4 up the way up. When replacing the mainspring, this caused the outer coil to be displaced upwards as well such that it protrudes out of the barrel and caused the barrel lid to not sit quite flush to the barrel. Since this is a motor barrel, the lid is actually the first wheel and inner coil tube/hook all in one piece, with no “snap down” action that would have made the problem more immediately obvious. Maybe with an older mainspring the spring’s end hole was enlarged such that this wasn’t an issue, but hard to say how it ever worked otherwise. Replacing the barrel with one from a different model 1900 where the hook was properly vertically centered allowed the lid to sit flush without mainspring interference and the friction problem went away. The bridge was far too thick to be bent (and isn’t), for those of you thinking that was the problem. Placing the removable arbor in the watch without the rest of the barrel proved that the proper end shake was actually there as long as the overall height of the assembled barrel was correct.
    • You are so true on a lot of what you have said. The main reason for changing the mainspring even if the old one is in good order is because it will take out your thinking that the mainspring is contributing to poor power output or fluctuations in amplitude. If a new spring is fitted that box can be crossed off as a potential source of a problem. Most customers are happy to pay the extra £20 for a new mainspring if they are already parting with a couple of hundred pounds for a service. A new spring is an investment for good running for the future.
