Lighting Techniques

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I'd be very interested to know what techniques members employ when taking macro shots for reference. I personally have a 5mp camera on my zoom microscope & a 144 white led ring light on the bottom. The only thing I find is the pics look so cold & nothing like the colour of the original subject. I understand that this is due to using a white led ring light, I'd just be interested to know what other options I have. I also use a Panasonic fz200 Inc macro filters & light tent. However, whilst disassembling it really isn't convenient to start moving my subject etc. Could anyone recommend anything that would give more of a natural colour to fit on the bottom of my scope. 4702726a24e5121103fb2370ddaa6fa5.jpg

Hi DJT2,

have you tried experimenting with the white balance on your camera?

I use a white LED ring light and I have the WB set to cloudy / overcast sunlight, this seems to give me the most accurate colours although they are not quite perfect.

Also, the set up on your monitor may have an impact on how you see your pics so a bit of colour calibration there may help.

Hi Marc, unfortunately yes I've tried the white balance & it still looks very cool, just slightly duller. Also, when viewed on a different monitor I get the same result. It just makes the metal look to metal if you know what I mean. It probably doesn't help that I have no real natural light in the room.

I've just read a fantastic article about macro photography & lighting.

From what I'm understanding.. I'll need a diffused alternative light source. I'm even considering a high powered torch on a gorilla stand & peice of paper in front. I'll experiment this evening.

I always correct colour and contrast in Photoshop afterwards regardless of what camera if light source I'm using.

Hi Geo, I had thought of that. I suppose I could just create a preset to save time.

The only issue for me with retouching pics is.. It starts to become time consuming, like the preferable rabbit hole. Being a truck driver & only being home approx 42hrs at weekend, time is a premium.

    • Hiya watch people,  any more ideas on what to do here yet ? How about just adding ourselves to waggy's list for now. You dont have to add your full name and an email that can be trashed takes minutes to set up.
    • Certainly looks like a ring that needs unscrewing in that photo. It definitely looks like a thread above the castellated ring as well. Separate to the caseback ring thread. It even looks to be a smaller diameter. I would expect that. Once undone out of its thread, it should fall out of the case. Would it be possible to make a tool shaped like a letter H with one side of the H engaging the castellations in the ring and the other side of the H for you to be able to unscrew it using your hand? Making a tool with 6 'legs' to pick up all of the castellations would be a labour of love.
    • Can anyone advise how to remove the crystal from a Vertex DD case ?  I think I need to unscrew an internal retainer ?  It definitely isn't just pushing out.
    • Alright, the job is done. I first filed down the stubs flat. I then used a Proxxon hand drill first with a 0.5mm bit to score a point to work from, then a 1mm drill bit to properly drill out some lug holes. I just went slowly, checking the depth as I went. I drilled the inside of the lugs, leaving the outsides unblemished. I was worried that drilling at an angle might be a problem, but it turned out fine. Lug holes don't need to be very accurate, so it was actually easy to create holes to easily accommodate a spring bar. The result is a 'good enough' outcome that worked for me. Thanks for your help everyone, loving the hobby so far. I learn so much with each project.
    • Welcome to the forum. Yep not a cheap hobby by any means , Ali Express, the Chinese Amazon has some decent tools but should ask the members their thoughts before purchase.  A little reading to help you along. TZIllustratedGlossary.pdf
