Hi all - As I have acquired more automatics, I've started to wonder what normal behavior should be for a mainspring that is wound until it begins to slip. My first auto was a Vostok 2416 and if hand wound up to say, 18-20 turns, the mainspring slips audibly with that soft "twang" of unwinding the same as when placing a spring from a winder expanding into a barrel. It will then accept another 8-10 turns before it slips again, 8-10 turns, slip, etc. It runs for about 34-36hrs if wound to just before it the slip.

Knowing that automatic mainsprings had to slip in the barrel to prevent overwinding, I had just assumed it was normal to slip and unwind halfway. Other autos I've since acquired including another Vostok 2416 do not behave the same way (so it's probably not another oddball Vostok behavior). I never hear or feel a slip from an NH35, or from the other 2416. And a Chinese auto when hand wound will reach a point where the wind feels rougher, as though the bridle has started to rotate around the barrel wall without unwinding.

Does it sound like my original 2416 is not behaving as expected? Possible that insufficient or no braking grease was applied to its barrel? It's coming up on my list to attempt a service and I guess I'm trying to gauge whether I should start sourcing a new mainspring if you think it's likely something is broken in there. I have not disassembled it yet.

Hi

I have not worked on a huge amount probably under 40, and mainly Seiko and Citizen and a TAG and have never felt or heard the mainspring slip on any of them.

I got the impression when I asked about it that the slip is so gradual that it should not be detectable.

Given that I have not don't that many and am quite new at this dont take what I say as correct, await a more knowledgeable reply 😉

On Seikos the transition is very smooth because the entire system is designed for maximum efficiency. There is no sound, but you can feel the reduction in torque by holding the driver with the very tip of two fingers, and turning it slowly, exercising just the minimum force needed.

Testing on bench is just indicative. If the auto winding behaves on the wrist, as in skipping a day of wearing without the watch stopping or slowing down, then all is good in that department.

This behavior is not normal! It indicates a worn spring or bent bridle. The mainspring bridle should just slip to the next notch in the barrel wall which is 1/6 turn only.

I have this problem with my Vostok Amfibia. Originally before I  used braking grease in the barrel, it didn't have this problem. I haven't tried cleaning out the barrel and using normal grease. I should really do that and post my findings.

I had this issue with a Citizen and assume that the bridle got slightly deformed when pushed into the winder barrel. The grease has no major influence imho.

Interesting, thanks. It has had this behavior since it was brand new so I wonder if it's a bad spring install. I do plan to strip it probably next month and see what happens after relubricating it.

Yes, I'd be interested to hear the results.

    • HI everyone Some context: I'm "in love" with old Timex. As someone who has always liked watches, I knew Timex (my first watch and another project) but, in fact, the brand had never really caught my attention. By pure chance I bought, in a set of two others watches, a small m24 that was sold as not working (run and stop), which actually started working by setting the date by manually moving the hands (15 days). This coincidence made me interested in its history, its reputation, simplicity/complexity of the movements and also because some were made in Portugal back in 70’s and 80’s. A few days later I found this beautiful 1975 Viscount, m33 (very low price, almost offered) and this is where I need your help.  It is in very good condition and works well (-20s per day is not a problem for me), and although the day of the week changes correctly, the date is "stuck" on the 10th. I live in a small town that only has one watchmaker and when I purchased this watch (and having read about these movements) I thought that since it was something theoretically "simple" (probably not related to the movement), he would easily solve the problem. I couldn't be more wrong. It was as if I had proposed a pact with the devil. He refused and said he wouldn't touch the watch (although he had serviced several of my watches before - Seikos and old Swiss brands). He suggested I wear the watch like this or trash it. As I mentioned in my presentation to the forum, I have some experience in digital watches, but in manual watches I am a complete beginner. I know how to remove hands, crowns and little else. I've been doing my homework, reading the technical manual and watching a few videos on YouTube. I think I can get to the part of removing the dial without any major problems. I know that in the Date Frame there is a wheel that at the top has a tab that activates the Day Wheel and that at the bottom activates the Date Lever My aim is to try not to ruin anything and  get the date working again. The help I needed (I intend to post photos) is that what should I expect? What are the most common problems that cause this system to get stuck (in this case just the date).   PS -  My secondary objective is to buy a strap at a overpriced value from the watchmaker just to rub it in his face that I managed to get the watch working properly. PS2 - In the photos you can see that before midnight the day of the week is already changing but the day of the month has not changed.   Sorry about the english. Best Regards Vasco
    • What is it from and how did it become bent ? It should bend back - I would heat it whilst bending
    • Ha, same here. I just looked and I've lots of pictures of my cars, be hardly any of me - I have a face better suited for radio. I did find this from about 20+ years ago. I'm the young looking one at the back, under the front nozzle.
    • I have a 6564 with me what is take a same tropic 12 crystal, most likely have the same parameters for the bezel. Do you need the measurement for that?
