Pocket Watches Without Cases

Ever wondered why there are so many pocket watch movements without a case on eBay.

 

Well my suspicions were confirmed today after talking today to a guy who does house clearances. 

I asked if he ever gets watches he said yes but normally he throws them away as they are just not worth the trouble unless they are cased in silver or gold. 

 

His most resent one was a gold cased pocket watch he ditched the movement but got £70 for the case. 

 

He said he will call me next time he finds any watches but I have my doubts.

I knew of that practice for the metal. Many movements are broken down for the metal as well. It's a shame what greed does. Many rare fusees have gone to the grave this way.

That's interesting,, often wondered why there are so many movements on there own for sale.

The Waltham movement I bought,,according to an American pocket watch site should have been in a gold hunter case, or that's what their database says when I put the serial number in.

Shame that the watches end up this way.

This has been going on for years, which is why you occasionally see advert following advert on eBay - a whole string of movements - all from the same seller.

 

Very sad.
