Hello, very new to watch repair!

Hi,

it's only been a a few months I've gotten interested in watches, and that's gotten me interested in maintaining/repairing them.

It all started this summer when I was out for dinner with 2 other couples - it turned out both the "trailing husbands" were jewellers.
They didn't talk shop much - we talked 60s/70s cars + motorbikes, my passion for 70s and early 80s arcade machines, retro gaming consoles and various other retro stuff.
That led me to start looking at watches of the era (for fun). I fancied getting something from the 70s, more for a laugh than anything.

I started looking around websites and some Youtube posts.I suddenly discovered I have a real passion for watches!

I got myself a repro Direct Time, then a New Old Stock Direct Time, then a NOS Catena Spaceman from a serious UK collector, then various LEDs (no Pulsar yet - holding out on a good one), a little Seiko5 that I adore, then (again for a laugh) a lot of 100+ "junk" fashion watches, which had a number of LCDs I liked.

I realise most "watch repair" forums are for mechanicals, which is fine - and I definitely need help repairing the 2nd Catena Spaceman I bought!

Anyway, hello all :)

Thanks all!

good to hear it’s a friendly place, and also I can ask for help with quartz and even LED/LCD :woohoo-jumping-smiley-emoticon:

my first tasks are to get my Seiko5 up and running again, presume it needs a new capacitor and some “standard” TLC.

Then, get my Catena Spaceman up and running properly. I assume it needs the same.

I will do some looking around the forum, but I’m sure I’m like most new folk on here, in that I need guidance on tools, training, where to buy spares etc.

I am a professional “IT geek”, and already seen a couple on here use apps to measure their timepiece health etc ;)

    • As Richard said, this is a really old school trick for joinery.  Cut i strip of paper, might need to be watch paper  around 1 " x 1/2" lay it over a staking block then press the stud screw into and through the edge of the paper upto the head of the screw. You probably wont even need to pull the paper away the head will pull itself through.
    • Thanks Jon, my mum is getting there day by day, so strong and determined, they dont make em like this anymore 🙂 Old folk are so amazing,  my mum used to love her golf, she didn't stop playing until she was 70 . Enjoy your trip and your golf.
    • Hello,  i am looking to source a winding stem (winding arbor) for a waltham 6/0 d movement. I have found some that claim to fit 6/0, 6/0s, 6/0b etc and somealso claim they will also fit the d as well. The d does have hacking which is driven by the stem seating completely. Given some of the costs of these, i was hoping someone would know of any interchangeability with a source, or know a source where a confirmed 6/0 d stem can be had. I am in the US so a US dealer is best.    thanks in advance.
    • So great to see and hear- your mum looks great! …my mil had a stroke last summer in the golf course parking lot. I’m flying out tomorrow to visit and play golf. she’s ornery because she can’t get off the tee but I hear she makes up for it on the greens since she’s been putting since a week after her stroke 🧐…
    • Very best wishes to you and your family, as a carer myself I know how difficult things can be.
