1968 Timex Marlin

I'm helping an old friend that's trying to repair a watch that belonged to his late wife. He'd like to pass it down to his granddaughter as a gift. He is really good repairing old clocks but has no real experience on watches.

The watch in question is a 1968 Timex Marlin. As best as I could tell, it has a #24 movement. He brought it to a local jeweler but was told the watch couldn't be repaired. He decided to look at the movement and saw that the hairspring for the balance wheel is bent up. Since he doesn't have a computer, I found another 68' Marlin on Ebay and purchased it for him so he could swap the movements but keep the original case, crystal and band. The one I got, unfortunately was damaged during shipping.

So the big question is, where can I locate a hairspring or a hairspring and balance wheel for a 1968 Timex Marlin. Also, if between him and I if we are unsuccessful in repairing the watch, are there any members that have a unique interest in a Timex Marlin that may be able to assist.

The hairspring is designed to be replaceable, the service manual explains the process. You need to take great care to not loose the retaining pin, or mangle the replacement. 

You can also possibly "unfankle" the damaged hairspring. It requires a lot of patience though.

Hairspring, mainspring, click spring. Which part number are you searching for?

Andy, thanks for the question, its the hairspring and I've got one located thanks to JerseyMo. I'm new to the forum and still trying to figure out how to reply directly to the person asking a question.

You accomplish it by selecting the + Quote command. It will copy their comments like yours above, then you can reply. As it's an open forum, everyone will see your reply. It's designed this way so that all of us gain knowledge from the exchange.

      This is as complicated as epilame, too many unknowns. The life expectancy in the UK is circa 80, so most people from 1944 or earlier are dead.  Assume they had children at circa 20, they died in 2004. Their children started selling 1944 watches in 2004, so pre-1944 watches must be getting more rare.   It doesn't work though because as you stated some were sold as tat, but since watch prices have increased people have decided to sell when they may not of done in the past.

      Questions about my Bravingtons Renown Mantel Clock

      I was wondering whether anyone could assist with some questions I have about my latest acquisition, which is a two train ‘Bravingtons Renown’ mantel clock - Pics attached I have done some reading about Bravingtons and believe they sourced movements from various suppliers, so I wondered whether anyone recognises this one. I have stripped and cleaned the movement and the clock is now running well, but there are a couple of dodgy brass springs that I would like to replace. I haven’t found anything suitable searching the internet so I wondered does anyone know of a supplier that might help. Last question is about the veneer on the case, it is generally in reasonable condition but there are a couple of patches on the top where the veneer has lifted. So far, I have tried to reactivate the existing adhesive by heating from below and above with a hair drier, then clamping for a day or two. It has improved slightly but the bulge is still visible. I’d be grateful for any advice if anyone has dealt with this sort of repair before.

      Thank you very much,T. I'll try turning the arbour from the clock face end very carefully in case I haven't reassembled the suspension block correctly (I had to make up a suspension spring using remnants of a broken one as I haven't been able to find an exact replacement online).
