Nice pick up

Managed to pick this up over the weekend at an auction, prices were very high with quite a few bidders and half the lots from last year, but I managed to get this for £35 amongst a few other bits and bobs.

A swift clean as I was about to strip it down or send it off for repair, only because when I plugged it in it fizzed abit then stopped, so I was hunting around for places that sell parts etc etc whilst doing that I was doing the cleaning and stripping and was going through things logically so started with the fuses and yes the one in the plug had gone, to be fair it was an “ever ready” brand so god knows how old it was.

Anyway i swapped it out and plugged it back in (tank half full with water) and turned it on, well it ran and ran with no problems. Gave it the tin foil test and this was the result after 30 secs or so.

A nice amount of even destruction to the foil, im quite happy with my purchase and looking forward to putting it to good use.

Nice catch! My small sized ultrasonic looks like the toy it probably is besides that one.

Your mentioning of alufoil test made me curious. Can you expand a bit on that topic?

Should one really expect the foil to be ”eaten” like that in the ultrasonic? Was this using some cleaning solution or just pure water?

I see a dirty chiming movement to the right that needs a bath. Congratulations on your purchase.

I see the sticker says Southern Watch and Clock suppliers. I used to get my watch and clock parts and a few tools from them. They were in Orpington Kent. They closed years ago.

I’ve seen this tip around the forums but it is actually on L&Rs website, they say you should see pit marks and slight damage, I will say that the foil I used was the thinnest foil I could find.

Yes you do see a chiming movement there, there are 2, one is my fathers from his grand mother clock, I had it before but it wasn’t running right, first 3 train movement that I had worked on, so I have it back to see what I missed the first time, the other is for spares, just incase. As for SWC from Orpington you are correct shame they stopped trading.

    • Thank you for your introduction and welcome to this friendly forum. We all look forward to your contributions and continued involvement.
    • Drat and double drat i was looking forward to the royalties on that idea.
    • Compression Spring Various Size. This might be helpful. I have watch furniture restorers and how they go about this problem, they inject glue underneath with a syringe and clamp it, leave over night. Next day remove clamp and it smooth. You could use an iron but be careful not to burn the wood.  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265697329513?chn=ps&_ul=GB&var=565484998457&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A1jd_-94ilTHWZLQ3PxHeC1A73&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-134428-41853-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=565484998457_265697329513&targetid=1647205088320&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=1006662&poi=&campaignid=17206177401&mkgroupid=136851690655&rlsatarget=pla-1647205088320&abcId=9300866&merchantid=119334104&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwir2xBhC_ARIsAMTXk849TnBArEYdgv1DpHf_somCZYmB7ViqD3UtvNJJc_dn4kj0AFxBXngaArSAEALw_wcB
    • 🤣 i think your first statement is rather dramatic, but i will take it in good humour.  I think the thread speaks for itself John.  What we are aiming for and when i say we, thats not actually that many that have spoke up. Is to have a back up plan to keep members in touch in case the forum ever disappears. So in essence yes the group has maybe taken on a life of its own and would like to remain together forever ( 🤣 i can also be dramatic )  maybe more members need to give some input of how they feel about it or say they are just not that bothered.  Either way at least the question gets answered. Can i ask what the forum means to you and how you would feel without it ? Thats one answer Rich from one person, without knowing how others feel the thread was just a waste of time. Aw Rich are you saying you'd miss me ? I'm touched 🙂
