Hi. I just stripped and services a nice longines with date change. The watch keeps excellent time but stops ticking just before midnight when the date starts to change.

Before I strip it down I though I would ask where to look.

Thanks

The datewheel could be worn... are there any ridges or burrs? Another reason could be a mainspring in poor condition or barrel walls lubricated wrongly resulting in early slipping/poor power.

Also check that the jumper and its spring is correctly fitted.and not binding. Date change wheels are usually shouldered so check that you haven't got the wrong one in.

Also was the date change working before you worked on it?

Thanks for the reply. The watch had been sitting not working before I serviced it. The date does jump when advancing the hands manually. The seconds keep ticking but the hour and minute get stuck when the date starts to change.

Did you change the mainspring? or at least take it out of the barrel to examine if its still is good?

Apart from mainspring, you need to get the dial off and observe the datechanging parts closely while winding the hands forwards.

What movement is this?  I believe the cal.990 is sensitive to date-wheel condition.

If the seconds keep running then it suggests that the watch amplitude is sufficient, ie. the watch movement isn’t actually stopping.

Does the date changeover feel smooth when you manually advance it? Check for wear and correct lubrication.

Also, does the canon pinion feel tight enough when you go to adjust the time? It’s hard to describe the right amount of resistance, but it should be noticeable.

    • Thanks for the answers. In my case space is very limited: I only have the kitchen table on evenings. This is why I am considering a mostly water-based system (keeping heptane only for balance complete and pallets) and no cabinets, no big machines. Any advice for water-based detergents that I could procure from Sweden (ordering from Cousins is OK especially for non-hazardous liquids because normal shipping would be used). Should I really get an ultrasonic for those or would it also work by hand? Thanks!
    • I'm glad it worked out well for you. Must feel good to learn some new watchmaking black magic huh? 😂 Can you post a photo of the crown after all this, I'm a bit interested in how it looks compare to how yellow it was before, never thought alum could dissolve oxidation as well, maybe I can work out the chemistry behind it, something to do with the electrochemistry list, but I'm too lazy for it so 😂 you are lucky it was only yellow, the layer must be so thin it didn/t damage the finishing enough to be noticeable.
    • Thank you Andy, I will keep that in mind.  Fortunately this time, I tried to drill the stem out before finding out about the alum method, therefore most of the stem was hollowed out.  When I took the crown out of the third bath, I was able to screw the whole replacement stem in.  It us now in the ultrasonic cleaner to get any remaining gunk out. claudio
    • I haven't been on the forum for a while 🙃 A family member had a 955.112 watch running with an intermittent fault. Bought a NOS 955.112 movement, but to be sure, I'll give it a full service. It has been a long time since I did the 955.112, so I went back to @VWatchie walk-through ........ Again, I'm struck by the quality of it ❣️ Superb work 👏 🫶 🙏
    • Hi Neven , Agree we you that guard pin is in general a suspect , but OP replaced the fork, no joy.  Perhaps roller is damaged or misses the guard pin, so OP is going to check the escapement with high magnification &  adjust end shakes as well. Regs
