Pocket Watch Stops

So I'm pretty sure I have the answer and I know there could be several solutions but I have an English pocket watch that runs, but as soon as you wind it so that the mainspring is as far as you can wind it it stops. My guess is a beat error which it has a big one, but if you shake it it still doesn't start up again. Also the reason why I haven't adjusted the beat error is because I can't remove the screw that holds the stud in place. The slot on the screw is not deep enough for a screw driver to grip. Any suggestions and solutions on all the above would be great.
