Cannon pinion loose

I've changed hands on a couple of eta 2824 /2836 movements and a chronic fear of mine is that I will "loosen" the cannon pinion in the process.

I have done this already a couple of times and can tell I've caused some damage when the minute hands starts to loose or gain time compared to the hour hand.

What is the proper way to fix and...is there a surefire way to avoid this? I have a few watches I'm needing to remove the hands from, but I'm paranoid I'm going to mess up the wheels...

Just changing hands should not cause the canon pinion to slacken if it was in good condition in the first place.  If the canon pinion is slack on the calibre you mention, it will have to be replaced due to the type it is.  Friction is not governed by the internal diameter of the tube, it is factory set where the large wheel is attached to pinion.

Is there a possibility you have inadvertently enlarged the hole in the hand when fitting it?

Occasionally the pinion separates from the large wheel. I then have to "press" it back on. Could this cause some issue? It always seems to be a nice tight friction fit...but for some reason the hands on the movements of question move sporadically...

It's possible the hands were loosened. I'll take one apart tomorrow to see if that is the issue...thanks

Your canon pinion is knackered if it has been separating from the wheel.  Replace it with a new one and that will sort your problems.

Geo is correct you cannot tighten that type of cannon pinion. Are you pulling the hands of correctly? because it is quite easy to pull the cannon pinion away from the wheel.

I'm not sure what the "correct" technique is...

I use a spring loaded hand remover tool and allow it to "do" most of the work.

If you are using hand remover tool the trick is to pull straight up and not to a side, these tools tend to place themselves even under the hands, when you see its even under neath a little pull is all that's needed. Are you sure you are using the correct size tool as there are different ones.

I've seen this type in three different sizes.

There are many styles & sizes but i recommend don,t buy one of these (Bergeon 30671) they are crap. I returned it as the centre pusher part does not centre.

I never used that type. This is what I had and they never let me down and so simple. I found these at cussons.
