One thing I'm not clear on - should there be any lubrication on the inside of the cannon pinion ?

If so, what, and where ?

What is the movement??? Most friction fit cannon pinions do require lubrication. You typically apply some oil to the center wheel post - not the inside of the cannon pinion. For most watches I usually use some Moebius D-5

Movements in general.

I've got service guides for some ETA and Seiko movements which show lubrication to the centre wheel post. I wasn't sure where to lubricate.

Right on the post - not in the cannon pinion. I usually apply a small amount and "drag" it up the entire length of the post.
