Old zenith cleaning machine

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, so I came across this old Zenith cleaning machine, the guy wants $225 for it.  It looks like its all there, though the power cord is trashed and needs replacing and the whole thing needs a cleaning.
If it works, would this be a better way to clean watch parts than using an ultrasonic cleaner?
I currently clean my parts in an ultrasonic, using Zenith wash and then three separate  jars of Zenith rinse, then set them in a dehydrator to dry.
Whats your thought on this ?
Thanks,

Bill

Thanks for the reply.
The guy seems to be changing his tune and wants more $ after all.
He said he needs to look at what he paid for it, and thinks it was around 300.
Feels like he’s milking me, not sure this is a going to work out for me.

you better hope he doesn't look at eBay otherwise the price is going to go up considerably. Machines that used to a few years ago somebody would probably give a tear for free especially if it's missing the jars now are getting rather interesting price is off of eBay. Some delusional sellers are hoping to get upwards of $1000 for something that was made in the 50s may be because it's a vintage and classic cleaning machine

I'm sure hundred people come and tell you the opposite answer but I would say no. Ultrasonic cleaning does a really nice job.

but I've seen examples of where people will ultrasonic clean first and then use a machine like this for the various rinse cycles. Then make use of the dryer or the machine.

Well, I got the machine for $300.
Did some rewiring and major clean up and she works great!
The jar lids are a bit trashed, so Im using thick plastic sheet as in intermediate cover, but other than that Im very happy!

Yes, thats what the food dehydrator is for. Works quite well.
3d printed caps would have to be solvent compliant, which might be a bit costly, But I need something better than ULO plastic liners.
Without the plastic liners the old liners are saturated and crumbling cardboard, which will contaminate the cleaning solutions without a liner/ barrier.

    • Ah so its you thats buying up all the DD calibres 🤨.
    • Hi Richard,  I keep buying CAL.59 movements to practice on 🙂 Not started yet though, I'm gathering tools and building my confidence to start.
    • Problem solved. For some bizarre reason, the hook on the wall of this barrel is not properly centered vertically, but is oddly high on the wall, maybe 3/4 up the way up. When replacing the mainspring, this caused the outer coil to be displaced upwards as well such that it protrudes out of the barrel and caused the barrel lid to not sit quite flush to the barrel. Since this is a motor barrel, the lid is actually the first wheel and inner coil tube/hook all in one piece, with no “snap down” action that would have made the problem more immediately obvious. Maybe with an older mainspring the spring’s end hole was enlarged such that this wasn’t an issue, but hard to say how it ever worked otherwise. Replacing the barrel with one from a different model 1900 where the hook was properly vertically centered allowed the lid to sit flush without mainspring interference and the friction problem went away. The bridge was far too thick to be bent (and isn’t), for those of you thinking that was the problem. Placing the removable arbor in the watch without the rest of the barrel proved that the proper end shake was actually there as long as the overall height of the assembled barrel was correct.
    • You are so true on a lot of what you have said. The main reason for changing the mainspring even if the old one is in good order is because it will take out your thinking that the mainspring is contributing to poor power output or fluctuations in amplitude. If a new spring is fitted that box can be crossed off as a potential source of a problem. Most customers are happy to pay the extra £20 for a new mainspring if they are already parting with a couple of hundred pounds for a service. A new spring is an investment for good running for the future.
    • According to Borel the 814 and 815 use the same escape wheel. It's kind of an oddball being so long.
