My First Pocket Watch (Cortebert? cal. 529)

Hi All,

I had some free time to work on a Pocket Watch I picked up a while ago. It wasn't running but it looked nice and appeared to be intact so I took a gamble.

It came in a tidy Dennison Star case and the movement says cal. 529 although I could not find much information about it. I think it is a Cortebert but Im not an expert. 

Disassembly was straightforward and everything appeared intact (apart from a missing adjustment screw on the balance). Nothing seemed worn or damaged and a couple of runs through the watch cleaner to clear the congealed gunk and it came out nice and clean.

Now I have this thing up and running Im not actually sure what Im going to do with it, Im not much of a waistcoat guy!

Not terribly dirty but a lot of gunk on the pivots.

 Keeper or not,  just running isn't all, should see ON TIMEGRAPHER how HEALTHY its running in various positions, specially that a balance screw is missing.

Your right its a cortebert, you know Russian Malnija copied cortebert

Malnija 3602.

I am not sure if balance screws off malnija fit your watch.

@Nucejoe I said it was clean, didn't say it was healthy 🙂

Its a fair comment tho, it was still on its first full wind and I was letting it run over night. Here are some pics of what it looks like on the timegrapher.

There is still some work to do - I have run out of adjustment on the balance and it is still gaining in most positions. The beat error is way out (I have not attempted to adjust a non-adjustable collet before so this will be a first). And it absolutely does not like being crown down - something else I need to look at.

Im guessing it is heading towards 100 years old? So I was pleased just to see it running again.

EDIT: I just realised that I didn't check the lift angle for this movement... I might need to revisit these measurements...

      Maybe you had a bad one H, the cheap blue one i use has been fine for nearly 3 years now. It demags enough to stop the tiniest of screws sticking to the carbon steel tweezers i use. If it were to fail at some point in the future i very  probably would go up a level of device just because.

      Unfortunately yes! Magnetism can wreak havoc on a mechanical watch movement if the balance hairspring becomes magnetised. The cheap blue Chinese demagnetise-rs are useless if you feed them the wrong voltage (> 110 V), and even so, they don't work very well. The one I got when I was new worked so poorly that it drove me nuts. Eventually, I was lucky to get a Greiner Magnomatic for a little money. It's an amazing tool that can be trusted to do its job perfectly in seconds. A new one comes with a price tag of  £885 excluding tax and shipping, and if you think that's a bit steep (I believe most of us would) and can't find a used one I'd go with @Jon's recommendation.
