Balance Wheel Wobble!

Hello, everyone!

I have a pocket watch balance wheel that has a slight wobble on it when it is spun. (Collet and hair spring removed) Can you suggest a way of correcting this wobble without causing damage to the pinion? It obviously needs to be 'manhandled,' but how?

Hi Len,

 

Five possibilities.

1. Broken jewel...since you've removed the hairspring I assume you would have eliminated this.

 

2. Too much endshake..ditto above..

 

3. Bent pivot.... inspect pivots closely. If bent then you need to change the balance shaft. While some guys have success with bending pivots back into shape your chances of failure are high.

 

4. Balance wheel not level on staff. You need to remove the roller table, user a stake larger than the riveted portion to get the balance wheel level, then re-stake the balance wheel so that it stays put. You also need to re-poise the wheel as it is possible the wheel has shifted from its original position relative to the staff.

 

5. Balance wheel arm bent... not common but possible.. again roller table comes off,  Balance on staking block, gently massage the arms of the balance wheel to get it back in shape. Make small changes and check constantly.

 

Watch truing calipers can help identify the problem but don't attempt to fix the wobble with these as it will just break the pivot.

 

Sorry there is no quick fix!

If you haven't got bent pivots or cracked/chipped jewel then the balance wheel is bent, not good for isochronism. I personally true balance in calipers and would suggest this is the best place to do it.

There are two Truing processes, one in the flat and one in the round , always start in the flat first. Start at the balance arms always flat these first and then when the balance is true at the arms work your way round until the balance is flat. Small amounts of pressure can alter the flat quite easily, so no hammers involved!.

Truing calipers are made for this purpose, the balance staff does not sit on the smallest pinion but sits on the first shoulder of the pinion. On good quality Truing calipers a hole is seen a short distance from the end of the bush, with a good loupe you can actually see into the hole and see if the pinion ends are straight themselves when the balance is turned in the calipers, just make sure the calipers are fairly tight up to the staff shoulders before attempting truing, you don't want to break the pinion so.

There is an adjustable Truing gauge attached to all good Truing calipers, it's there for a purpose. You will notice a small vee in the Truing gauge, this allows you to miss any adjustment screws that may be in the way of the gauge when rotating the balance.,

Truing in the round is a different matter but still done in the Truing calipers. Best tool for this is a small flat notched lever bar. This sits over the rim of the wheel and is used to bend the rim inwards or outwards. It's specifically thin to get into the gaps between the adjustment screws. Always true from the top of the balance wheel, not the bottom.

It takes time and can be frustrating, but with practice it's doable. Don't forget to check poise afterwards!.

Might have figured it out. I have been working on this watch for a while and since I got it as a non runner in a terrible shape, there was no guarantee that parts were proper. I think the main screw that was used on the rotor was too long, so it was stopping the main train. As soon as I fished out a much shorter and larger headed screw, things were good again. Please celebrate with me.  
    • One-dip or naphtha should be safe, but are you sure it isn't magnetized?  I would also check that.  Although, if that balance is from an Elgin 760 0r 761, I would think it would have a hairspring of non-magnetic alloy.

    • Hi John I just did a Seiko Lord-Matic a front loader without a split stem, I used a crystal lift to remove it, although I had to have it that tight I though I was going to break the lift before the crystal would budge. So I decided that the press would be a better option as I think crystals with tension rings resist a lot of compressing. I used a crystal press to repalce it and the bezel with no issues, obviuosly a different watch to the Omega. I just took my time and kept inspecting the installation progress bit by bit Regards CJ
    • Hello All, I’m replacing the crystal in an Omega Dynamic, # 165.039, which houses a cal 552, installed through the front of the case. The replacement Sterncreuz crystal is, like the original, with tension ring. I removed the crystal using a compressed air technique to pop it out.  (I have a crystal lift, but I’m always fearful of marking the crystal edges and so avoid using it as much as possible). Now to the replacement -  any tips on putting the crystal back in?  Am I obliged to using my dreaded crystal lift to complete the task, or how about a crystal press?  I’ve put lots of crystals in using a press, but never with the movement in the watch. The thought of using one with a front-loader makes me very nervous, with the fully assembled watch sitting under the press. How would more experienced folks proceed here? Any advice, gratefully received… John Down Under…
