Help needed with fusee movement

I have been asked to look at a clock for a friend. He says it runs quite well when partly wound but does not run for long when fully wound. It is a fusee movement and I have never had a go at one of these so would appreciate any advice. I have read that it must be let down by removing the pallet and allowing it to run. Is this correct? Do you think I should clean the parts in an ultrasonic cleaner?

Have attached photos if that helps.

All advice is much appreciated. 20230826_173454(0).thumb.jpg.90239ca3c4fd603442c166ed1d17ae0f.jpg20230826_173536.thumb.jpg.e9353ccd90c2cb903f8ad62f29c05cb9.jpg20230826_173621.thumb.jpg.c0e533ea0847de74e011046ef5258601.jpg20230826_173558.thumb.jpg.d8118f461c82c1b12dd90720d7d785ae.jpg20230826_173547.thumb.jpg.6dd825f5f043682fbba956d3ce9c85c5.jpg20230826_173628.thumb.jpg.afeb244434b5585858945407d1cc5c6f.jpg20230826_173512.thumb.jpg.cee18935fd729bfa8f1621acc8ccd566.jpg

First of all this has had a service not that long ago. The movement is clean and the steel pins are new. From the photos I can see that there is a lack of oil on the escape wheel and the pallets. Make sure you have oiled all the pivots first, then remove the pallets and let it run down. There isn't that much power on as the fusee cone has most of the chain on it. Never use an ultrasonic on clock of this age. Check the two screws that screw the pallets to the crutch, if they are not tight they will cause a poor action enough to stop the clock. Are you sure it is in beat and that the wall is flat up against the back of the case. Clock movements that are clean usually mean trouble so look for worn holes, bad pivots, make sure all the wheels run true and check all the teeth. Barrel and fusee holes and pivots I know they are big but check for roughness and fitting. Look at the chain are all the links free and in good order. The spring should be removed so a good mainspring winder is needed so you can check it. I t could be warped  or tired.

Thanks OH. Especially about not putting it in the ultrasonic - I had a feeling it would be best to avoid doing that. I'll check over those things and see how we go. You could be right about it not being in beat - there are wall fixings on the base that he said he didn't bother with.

I'll update as I go along.

Well I took it apart and cleaned it all by hand (nowhere near the ultrasonic!) and reassembled it. Had to do a bit of research on how to reattach the chain but got there in the end.

Oiled the chain, checked the mainspring (it seemed fine) and oiled the pivots, the escape wheel and the pallets. Loaded a half turn on the mainspring and secured the click. Have set it up for testing and it has been running for about 3 hours now. So far so good...20230827_142118.thumb.jpg.e3be012f7a92db95059e25df42fd1ba1.jpg20230827_194518.thumb.jpg.482f95463eaa0588bf03d0d4ca5973b4.jpg20230827_194507.thumb.jpg.55d15f51aae5c23c1e45a891e0030eb9.jpg20230827_211016.thumb.jpg.40ea55020b08c1d3f5166fa6a622c73e.jpg

If you push the pallets right over against the pallet cock are the pallets still catching the escape wheel teeth. Or are the teeth just catching if so this can cause wear on just part of the teeth of the escape wheel, you need to move the pallets over.

Onu parçalara ayırdım ve hepsini elle temizledim (ultrasonun yakınında hiçbir yerde!) ve yeniden monte ettim. Zincirin nasıl yeniden takılacağı konusunda biraz araştırma yapmak zorunda kaldım ama sonunda oraya vardım.

Zinciri yağladı, ana yayı kontrol etti (iyi görünüyordu) ve pivotları, kaçış tekerleğini ve paletleri yağladı. Ana yaya yarım tur yüklendi ve tıklamayı güvence altına aldı. Test için ayarladık ve yaklaşık 3 saattir çalışıyor. Şimdilik fena değil...20230827_142118.thumb.jpg.e3be012f7a92db95059e25df42fd1ba1.jpg20230827_194518.thumb.jpg.482f95463eaa0588bf03d0d4ca5973b4.jpg20230827_194507.thumb.jpg.55d15f51aae5c23c1e45a891e0030eb9.jpg20230827_211016.thumb.jpg.40ea55020b08c1d3f5166fa6a622c73e.jpg

Hello. What oils did you use in this mechanism?
What is the recommendation for the winding spring specifically?

    • Thanks everyone for the replies. It seems setting the hand is a bit of a guessing game, and I thought there would be a very specific way to do it. Since the reserve indicator hand moves clockwise as the spring is wound, I tried setting it right at the start of the black side. But setting it there doesn't really make sense, because by the time the spring is halfway wound, the hand is only at the end of the red side... In my head halfway wound shouldn't mean the hand is still "in the red."
    • Lovely part of the country! I spend most of my days driving along the A64 for work in and around York. I'll be sure to drop plenty of questions soon! I've actually got a couple of watches on the way that I'm pretty sure I'll need some help with! They look pretty beat up from the pics but I love a challenge and an excuse to buy more tools 🤣
    • I have two of these in my home. You need to remove the movement from the case, take off the hands and remove the dial and take a few good photos of the front plate so I can see what the problem is. The round nut unscrews and the hands pull off pull them off from the center and not the tips as you could break them.
    • I asked the question of one of the sellers. Its for removing the pins and making the holes in motorbike drive belts. God knows why they were both in two seperate joblots of watchmaking tool, thats bizarre. I haven't posted your setting lever steel yet mike, been busy with my mum past few days and had a locked myself in at home lazy watch repair day today 🙂 but I'm out tomorrow so i will get it off to you then.
    • Hi everyone, I tried looking for answers on this online but came up with nothing, so I'm hoping some of you knowledgeable people might be able to help. I have an Elliot clock that has been in my family for at least 4 generations. I recently enherited it, and I'm trying to get it to run properly again, as it's been neglected a bit.  Here,s the problem. These clocks have a silencer mechanism, which is supposed to stop it from chiming between 11PM and 7AM but for some reason mine is silent between 1AM and 9AM. I have tried figuring out how to adjust it but have not managed. Does anyone have any idea on how to correct this? Please find attached some pictures of the clock. Thank you!
