So progress what's going on? Hiya John, apologies for not returning. I haven't made any progress as yet. The balance is still perched on the Luthy tool waiting for my attention. Just been very busy at work and sorting out my home this past month. I promise i will come back and post an outcome and tg readings when i get around to shortening the hairspring and reforming the end curve. I can't answer questions, so I am happy to see you, even though it's very late for us.

If that is so, then it is your fault ultimately. After all, you fully corrupted me - a newbie and a girl - sniff, a girl being knocked about in the rough horo sea, adrift and alone. It's what we in America call a damned shame. And please, don't make @oldhippy have to come close this post, he has so much to do as it is. Waiting for my phone to charge so i can watch a video of the oscillations in slow mothion. Nigh on impossible to figure out which is fast and which is slow just by watching

Thanks oh, i gave up with trying a slow motion video, there seems to be too much video trailing to tell whats happening. Ive been watching it for about an hour now with just with a little bit of magnification and my brain is starting to kick in and see the syncing between the two balances. The closest i have managed to get is 16 matching oscillations before it syncs out. Counting them is an easy way to tell if you've gone too far shortening or lengthening the hairspring. The goal of vibrating a hairspring would be a replacement new hairspring in other words are starting off with a long spring you know where you stand versus here we're not sure. Then you have to keep moving the hairspring through the tweezers until you reach a time where your sample balance exactly stays in frequency with the master balance and as you can see it's a pain in the ass to get there. this is why when you look at is a video on YouTube of one of the modern schools they talk about keeping the old traditions alive. Like turning a staff between centers and doing all this hand filing manipulation keeping all the traditions alive. Then they get to the hairspring vibrating and they use an electronic Greiner machine and they do not do it with the old-fashioned vibrating tool I find that actually quite amusing. Even they grasp what a pain in the ass this tool lives. Oh and of course the other problem they have is the infinite supply of raw hairsprings that were once available to torture the students learning how to vibrated hairsprings is no longer available.

Thanks John. About the title, i agree it was rather vague. Vibrating a hairspring really is a pain in the..... we say arse . Its taken me two hours to find the active point and 22 oscillations in sync is the closest i can get. Going either way with the hairspring in the tweezer and the two balances start to sycn out sooner so i must be close. The reason i started this was to see if the hairspring was timed correctly to the balance wheel ( and to play with a toy ) My tg was showing 400 seconds slow. As it happens the hairspring is timed correctly, the active point was almost in the center of the original terminal curve. So its now reassembly and back to finding the actual cause of the slow rate. Another day now as its almost midnight in the Uk. Appreciate the input chaps John and OH.
