I recently salvaged a National Watch Co dial (this was the name used of Elgin pocket watches before 1874). The dial is in good shape, but the subchapter is no longer attached. The subchapter is clearly smaller than the opening, and it appears some type of white adhesive was used to fill in the gap as well as attach the subchapter. Does anyone have insight into what I would use to reattach the subchapter, and the steps to do this?

Years ago it would have been shellac. Today I would think any clear glue will do the trick, just make sure you don't use too much and don't get it over the two dials.

Whatever was used originally (or at least the last time) was white and has somewhat of a putty characteristic.  It was used to fill in the gap between the subchapter and the dial, since the subchapter's circumference is smaller than the hole in the dial.  I've thought of hypo cement, but wouldn't that show the gap?

SSteel, this is a old style pinned dial.
