I know that watches are highly personal, but even with this in mind I am looking for what you think are the overlooked brands out there that deserve more attention and/or are fun to repair and/or collect. For example, I recently did a Zodiac watch and really enjoyed the quality and style and began to wonder how come this brand had slipped under my radar and I hadn't been aware of them previously? We all know about brands like Rolex etc. and they are great watches, but I am interested in brands that may not be so obvious that have their own charm that I haven't come across yet. For example, I have an Enicar on the way and I have never worked on one or even had one in my hands before, but based upon what I see online (YT Horology Biology) maybe there is something to his passion about this brand and they are another undiscovered gem that I am currently unaware of??

So here is your chance to shine the spotlight on your under-the-radar brand(s) or brand(s) that may be well-known but are under-rated and why you think they are deserving of more (or additional) attention from your fellow WRT users.

In my fairly limited experience (about 100 watches),there's a couple of makes that impressed me by their quality, over what I was expecting (Omega, Universal, Cyma etc I was expecting quality) :

Longines (up to 70s) - not really a surprise. But I think I'd take a manual wind Longines over an Omega !

Revue. I have a couple of Vertex Revue, the movements are nothing fancy, but everything just fits so nicely. One is a Calibre 59 (as used in the Revue version of the Dirty Dozen watches). Basic, but lovely movement.

From another thread,  @nickelsilver  and @Nucejoe have recommended Pesuex as a quality brand.

Ya sure Ball is high grade but expensive to have it serviced.

Will have a look at them and maybe see if I can pick up a bargain.

Kings Seiko 5625 & 5626 are chronometer

(high grade)  movements, some are officially certified chronometer watches, I have seen used ones for $500  & up   on ebay.

I don't know if a non chrono balance complete is ever made to fit them yet make sure you get one with good balance complete, or have the option to return.

That I think is the least expensive chronometer watch money can buy for the quality

I think the Croton, Croton Nivada Grenchen, and or NIvada Grenchen "family" of vintage watches are somewhat under the radar. Many aquamatic models have ETAs and have great dials and cases.

Here is an example I probably posted somewhere else. SS case with drilled lugs, lovely dial, and an ETA automatic. I really like the way the crown fits into the case. 33.4mm wide, 41mm lug to lug. Works well on my small wrist.DSCN5299.thumb.JPG.6c97917b252d71b0f840655fc8b8808c.JPGDSCN53002.thumb.JPG.0fc803b58753a9598b1e5296e46ccfea.JPGDSCN53012.thumb.JPG.902194282b6d59e8b4f528dd51c459a5.JPGDSCN53022.thumb.JPG.3c8eab366de061a5ea46dce2bb30974a.JPG20230626_2139543.thumb.jpg.c0f79d4012efe9993dcc90eb0bb4df09.jpg20230626_2139542.jpg.5c540e3cf9e3a2301e0697e07f216ac1.jpg

    • Hello Tom and welcome to the forum.
    • Hah! Well, California will have to do. Lived in TX for a brief period back in the early 70s, though, so maybe that counts. 🙂 Funny you should mention making vacuum tubes- I've actually tinkered with that! It's REALLY tough to do, and I've never made one more complicated than a simple diode that barely worked, but I have played around at it. But there's just no infrastructure for vacuum tube fabrication. I can get a lathe and learn how to use it to make complex parts, and while it might take a while to learn- and money to get the equipment, of course- it is possible to do more or less "off the shelf". But vacuum tubes, not so much. There are a few folks out there doing some crazy cool work with bespoke tubes, but they have setups that are far beyond what I can manage in my environment and it's mostly stuff they built by hand. I also have been playing with making piezoelectric Rochelle Salt crystals to replace ancient vacuum tube turntable needles- nobody's made those commercially for probably 60 years. I'm a sucker for learning how to do weird things no one does any more so I can make things no one uses work again. (I think this is drifting off the topic of lathes, lol).
    • You shoulda been born in Texas. Tough to make a vacuum tube though. You can substitute with a MOSFET eq ckt I guess. I was playing around making a pinion the other day. More to it than meets the eye.
    • Well, turns out it was a fake bezel! The crystal is domed mineral glass and I was able to find a cheap replacement that should be here in two days.  I used my crappy little press to pop out the cracked crystal, Ill give the case a good cleaning in the meantime and do a once over on the movement.
