Local watch cleaning products for watch cleaning machines - Need some professional advice.

Hello,

I have two recently acquired two watch cleaning machines that I am in the process of restoring.

My local supply house does have a watch cleaning solution and rinse that I wanted to run past some of the wise minds here.

The cleaner is called Chronomex, Ive requested the data sheet for this so I cant say what is in it yet.

The rinse is pure Hexane as far as the data sheet says.

My question 1:
Is Hexane safe as a rinse? Does it dissolve the shelac or react with anything?

My question 2:

Can I put the balance complete into the watch cleaner (IF I HAVE IT ATTACHED TO THE MAINPLATE< OF COURSE)?

Any tips would be appreciated.

I wouldn't use Hexane. I just googled it and this is what I got.

Inhaling n-Hexane can irritate the nose, throat and lungs. ► Exposure can cause headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, lightheadedness and passing out. Higher levels can cause coma and death.

It is the correct rinse for your water free cleaning fluid. It is like  Naphta or lighter fluid and doesn‘t harm components.

if the watch material house sells this it would seem like it's probably safe to use on watches. Then in your profile you don't specify a location because I'm curious as to where you're located

Are you in South Africa perhaps? That sounds like the stuff BJ Oberholzer sells. Which, by the way, is exactly what I use. Chronomex for cleaning and their Hexane rinse afterwards. I've done many, many using an Ultrasonic and now recently a watch cleaning machine and I'm pretty happy with the results.

EDIT: I see now you're in South Africa so it's the same stuff I use. I have to admit I'm jealous that you've found watch cleaning machines locally to restore. I've been looking for ages till eventually building my own

Ah thats great to hear! Glad to know theres someone else using the stuff from BJ. Oberholzer. I feel happier getting some now, thanks!

Was an extremely lucky find. Not much of that kind of stuff around anymore, especially here.

Will see if I come about any others so I can let you know.

Haha, funny you should say that as I’ve refined it a little more today - even tested it on the dirtiest movement I could find. I’ll put a little something together and post it somewhere soon

I was in the same situation where I couldn't buy or import commercial watch cleaning fluids so I decided to figure out what was in the commercial versions of watch cleaning solutions and make my own versions. My journey is documented in this forum and you can find it here.

I think I managed to do a fairly good job and I now use these fluids in my watch cleaning machine with great results. Let me know if you have any questions

      Thanks, ManSkirtBrew.  I started looking for a setup like yours and ran across this.  It was about half the price of the JKA Feintaster (depending on what auction you were in), and it's a Bergeon.  I bought it because I thought the price was fair (eBay - Buy it now), and I'm a sucker for vintage tools. It also has a table, so it should be easy to use for measuring jewels. I wonder if the the contact points can be changed out. Bergeon seems to manufacture new tables and accessories for the contemporary dial version. What do you guys think of it? I'm sorry this post seems to have taken a detour.       This is a flying cutter, usual one. The cutter itself is shown in the pictures in the first message, it is made of broken tungsten carbide drill bit. I asure that all the angles of the cutter are as they should be. I have video - little older one - that I made when onse making the same kind of winding pinion for a Poljot 2200, which is even smaller than this one. It is not easy to see in the video, but the tool rest moves about 1mm towards the object in Y direction and then returns back untill cutter is rotating. Then the spindle is rotated one tooth ahead and everything repeated untill all teeth are cut.

      Latest project was a non-running ebay purchase with an FHF70 movement. I stripped and cleaned it, reassembled it, and got it running. So far so good, nothing damaged AFAIK.  I was oiling the top jewel on the balance (the one in the cock) which was a slightly unusual shock setting. I removed the spring (3 leaves) which was part of a chaton holding the cap jewel. This left the hole jewel behind which I retrieved with rodico and then lost it. I was taking it off the rodico, very gently as I thought, with tweezers, and then it just disappeared.  Fast forward a week, I got a donor movement, non-running, with the plan to just take the shock jewel that I’d lost. It was the same movement but had standard incabloc settings, and was steel rather than copper/brass.  I changed the cock and balance complete and it ran, not very well. I switched the lower jewel setting, cleaned and oiled both jewels and the replacement balance. Without the pallet fork the balance swings very nicely with a puff of air. With the fork in place, balance out, it flicks side to side nicely with power in the mainspring.  Put them together and it doesn’t run. The impulse jewel sits in the fork and it stops.      Any suggestions how I proceed? In case you didn’t follow that I have 2 FHF70 movements, nothing broken as far as I can tell, but mixing up the balance wheels and jewel settings results in a non runner.
