Hi, my name is Don and I live in Georgia. I have been interested in vintage wristwatches for several years. I thought that if I joined this site I could benefit from others which have much more knowledge than myself and would help me in collecting and restoring vintage wristwatches. I would like to thank you for allowing me to be a part of your group.

Hi Don, welcome to WRT! There are some really knowledgeable folks here. I don't know how many are collectors and the site certainly isn't about: "how much is this worth" but we do come across some vintage watches. You can increase your own knowledge by taking the classes offered by Mark here: https://www.watchfix.com/

Welcome Don. You have come to the right place and very polite of you, if you are already a collector then you have knowledge to share as well. And as Gary has said, here is not really the place to come get valuations as does happen from time to time. Its about our love for watches and their repair, not their high value. A lot of us repair movements that are practically worthless in fact we have a fantastic thread to post as such. 404 club, check to out £4.04 or the exchange rate of your location . Enjoy Don.

    • Unfortunately yes! Magnetism can wreak havoc on a mechanical watch movement if the balance hairspring becomes magnetised. The cheap blue Chinese demagnetise-rs are useless if you feed them the wrong voltage (> 110 V), and even so, they don't work very well. The one I got when I was new worked so poorly that it drove me nuts. Eventually, I was lucky to get a Greiner Magnomatic for a little money. It's an amazing tool that can be trusted to do its job perfectly in seconds. A new one comes with a price tag of  £885 excluding tax and shipping, and if you think that's a bit steep (I believe most of us would) and can't find a used one I'd go with @Jon's recommendation.
    • Yep Mike , i use exactly the same gauge for it.
    • You definitely pick up different names from different people of all ages from everywhere. Like learning different dialects of the same language. Its all part of the learning curve of any trade.  Both those two terms describe to me perfectly that they are one and the same. After a couple of years of knowledge you can figure out what is being talked about. There are times that i get caught out with something i haven't encountered before.
    • Mike, you have summed it up following the KISS principle.   Tom
