After destroying the Elgin 313 balance and not having any luck combining the other parts from the two movements, I put that aside and was going to re-assemble the Buren 410 Grand Prix. Unfortunately the setting lever gave up the ghost. I've seen other movements for quite a bit and I believe that I've actually found single piece parts (for what I paid for this whole movement).

I guess I'll set this aside as well. Maybe I'll see some 410 movements at reasonable prices?

Next up I guess will be the Omega 620. Last time I touched it, it looked like the balance wanted to go - maybe there's hope for that one?

This shot was taken with the 100M28. I also took several with the same lens with 21mm of extension tubes installed but this was overall a better image.

These are the unevitable setbacks and frustrating moments on the long way to mastery. I learned that especially in watchmaking you cann‘t imagine what can go wrong before it has gone wrong. I would wait with the Omega…

Horological terminology can always be interesting because in different parts of the world parts may have a slightly different meaning. But I'm pretty sure that the part you have a picture of is not a setting lever. I would probably go with the term set bridge it does by the way cross reference with some other movements I have a link . Then it looks like it might actually be in stock.

That is probably wise advise! I still have a smaller Elgin grade I haven't opened as well as the Pobeda Zim that hasn't yet arrived.

Ahh, having just visited Dr. Ranfft's site I see what you mean. My dial side looks different in the keyless area. In fact, I looked at all of the 10.5 manuals and I didn't see anything close. Just attached a shot of he keyless works prior to cleaning.

visited Ranfft and noticed dial side differences, added dial side shot and shot of keyless prior to cleaning

In watch repair the classic way to figure out a mystery movement is if you know the diameter the main plate so you have the size you go to the fingerprint system of the bestfit book. Then you can look at the setting parts because they're all unique and see if you can find your setting parts and then you know what your mystery movement is.

Your movement for instance is not a 410 as they setting components do not match at all which you've already confirmed so this brings up the problem of why do you think it is a 410?

I snipped out an image and? I'm not finding much information on the 195 or any parts at least one normally looking

I don't remember why I thought it was a 410. It might have been based on a cursory scan of Ranfft based on the 10.5 size and the fact that the train side of the 410 closely resembles the one I have.

It certainly looks like the 195 based on the above image. Ranfft doesn't show a 195.

    • Believe the relume (not a fan) was done a long time after the damage. 
    • I can only think of some chemical reaction to reluming
    • I have a little milling attachment for my WW lathe, but very rarely use it and not for wheel and pinion cutting. For that I use a small Sixis 101 milling machine. I normally do direct dividing, but sometimes have to do an odd count and use the universal index which also fits on the Sixis.   Back in the day when I didn't have a mill, I would cut gearing on my Schaublin 102. It has a universal dividing attachment which fits the back of the spindle. Both it and the one for the Sixis are 60:1 ratio, and with the set of 4  index plates I can do almost any division. When I've had to do a strange high count prime number, I print a disc with the needed division and just place the plunger on the dot. Any position error is reduced by a factor of 60 so still plenty accurate.   The machines are a mess in the pics as I'm in the process of making a batch of barrels for a wristwatch 🙃.   This is the Sixis. The head can also be placed vertically, as can the dividing spindle.   Dividing plates. The smaller ones fit another dividing spindle.   Universal divider for the Sixis. I put it together with parts from an odd Sixis spindle that takes w20 collets, like the Schaublin 102, and a dividing attachment from a Schaublin mill.     The dividing attachment for the 102. The gear fits in place of the handwheel at the back of the headstock.   And the little milling attachment for the WW lathe. I just set it on the slide rest to illustrate the size, you can see from the dust on it it really doesn't get used much. I think only when I change bearing in the head, to kiss the collet head seat (grinding wheel still in the milling attachment).
    • I read a lot about the quality (or lack thereof) of Seiko's 4R, 6R, 8L  movements...or more specifically the lack of regulation from the factory. Especially when compared to similar priced manufactures using SW200's or ETA's. I thought I'd ask those more in the know, do the 4R's and 6R's deserve their bad reputation, is it fairly easy for someone with minimal skills (or better yet a trained watch mechanic) to dial in these movements to a more acceptable performance.    For background I spent more on a 1861 Speedy years ago, expecting that the advertised 0-15s/d  would probably perform more like 5-7s/d. In reality it's been closed to 2-4s/d.
