landeron 48... I think

Recommended Posts

I have a Eureka watch with what looks like a landeron 48 movement in it.

The screw to release the winding stem just won't budge. I am using a screwdriver that matches the width of the screw head.

I haven't added any chemicals to release it as there is no evidence of water or rust that I can see.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

First of all, distinguishing between a 48, 148, 248 (348? 448?) can be hard for a seasoned pro.

Try turning it both ways. Wick some oil down into it, if you dip some closed #5 tweezers in oil they'll pull it up, then stick it down there and open, in it goes. Try tightening and loosening again, give it some time, hours, days. Worst case you break the detent screw, but parts for these are largely interchangeable, the basic ones at least.

If it's rusted, remember rust takes up more space than the simple steel, that's what binds it. Back and forth movement, to break up the (weak) rust, and oil to carry it away is the game.
