Hello all, I have a Certina KF 240 calendar movement.  The balance wheel pinion pivots are broken.  The replacement balance completes I see on ebay are gold colored, the original balance wheel is white.  Does anyone know if the materials changed on these balance wheels over the years?

Thanks for the help!

If you are concerned about keeping the original balance wheel, and if all other balance parts are in good state, and you have the needed tools and experience,  you can replace the balances staff only for a very small cost.

As posted by jdm fit a new staff to maintain originality.   As balances are manufactured as after market spares it is likely that is so, The weight spring etc will be the same.

Can you tell what is says on the package?  Genuine Certina has always used advanced technology for instance Nivachron is really antimagnetic and temperature resistant.

If your watch is in good shape, I,d search with reputable material houses.

This is true, unfortunately I don’t have the tools or experience to do this.

I will attach pics of the balance wheel and the eBay balance wheel.  The watch is not in good shape at all.  The dial looks like it was touched up at one point and it is missing the calendar pointer.  But the movement itself does not have any damaged parts aside from the balance wheel.  This makes a lot of sense, although it was not obvious to me. Next step is to see how much a repair shop would cost to source and replace the staff.

Thanks for the help everyone!

After posting the pics I realized they are not the same!  ?

Nevertheless, you are better off to just replace the balance complete with a new one. Any repairman skilled to build a well poised and balance oscilator is sure to charge more than the price of a new balance complete for his work.

I keep the old balance for when you are skilled enough to do it yourself.

Thanks for the quick response.  Only issue now is that the balance I have does not look like the one on eBay.  I could assume this was done if a different material was used to compensate for the weight.  I have a KF 320, I wrote the wrong movement on the title.

    • Oh, that's a bit worrying. I don't think I want to risk additional treatments, like the IPA or glycerin.
    • I have not attempted lume repair before but the idea is interesting. The uv glue might not bond directly with the old lume. I would probably mix the uv glue with a few drops of acetone before applying it to the old lume. The acetone would soften the old lume and allow the uv glue to diffuse into the surface and meld with it. Then allow a few minutes for the acetone to evaporate before curing it with uv. Most uv glues and varnishes have a layer of uncured resin that is caused by contact with oxygen in the air. This is the reason for the sticky surface after curing it with uv light. This uncured layer can be removed with IPA or by fully curing it by painting a layer of glycerin as the final layer to prevent contact with air, then curing it with uv.

    • The key is to try and find what the movement is and if there are no other numbers or markings on the movement then the next step would be using the like of BestFit based on the size and keyless works. The top one below is a Normal Bridle with no kind of end termination. What does the existing end termination look like.
    • Daniel, I guess You actually asked if the accuracy of the watch was improved after jewels added. One would not expect such accuracy improvement. The watch accuracy depends on many things and most of them are related to the balance and escapement. Well, it depends what is considered to be a no jeweled watch. If this is pin pallet watch wit cone balance pivots, then, believe me, replacing balance staff with one with cylindrical pivots in jewels will only worsen the things. Cone shaped pivots in cup bearings actually work better than  cylindrical, the only problem is that they wear faster. And, it will be hard to impossible to replace the pallet pins with ruby pins... The watch accuracy depends maimly on the balance and escapement adjustments ad it is no related to the presence of jewels. Adding jewels to the train wheel bearings may only lead to some amplitude increasing, and it is not sure too.
