My Wittnauer chronograph which I have owned for the better part of my life suddenly exhibits strange behavior.

Short story:  I wound it yesterday (like everyday), it runs, today I went to wind it and the stem acted as though the watch is fully wound.  What could be wrong?

Longer story: This watch sits on my desk along with about seven other watches that I monitor daily.  Been sitting here for several months (previously it had been stored away in a jewelry box).  It has been working flawlessly until today.  I opened the back, but, alas, it is a chronograph.  I cannot see the rachet wheel or click.  I was going to release power and then rewind it but, like I say...cannot get access to this stuff.

My watchmaking renaissance is in its infancy. I have repaired several watches in the last couple of weeks and only lost a couple of components (grrr!!!).  I am many months (years) away from tackling a chronograph.  I will probably take it in for repair unless someone on this forum can share the magic bullet.

Yes it is a VALJOUX CAL 729.  Picture below. 

According to the markings inside the back, it was last serviced in 1978 by Victor Page...who used to work for my dad. Not that it matters...just interesting history!

The Valjoux 23 and 72 and their cousins all suffer from weak ratchet wheel teeth. A tooth can break at any time; I am thinking that on the last winding a tooth came off and is now jamming things. The click is just barely visible through a hole to the left of the chrono castle wheel viewed as in the pic if you want to try to let the power down, but it will need full disassembly to get to the ratchet wheel.

Just a follow up on this issue.  When I engage the crown, slowly turning in the winding direction, I feel the engagement and the resistance of the click.  So, I hypothesize that the winding wheel is engaging the rachet wheel.  Could still be a broken tooth lying around blocking the rachet wheel from turning.

I have three choices: 1) take it to a professional to have it fixed, 2) practice for a year and then tackle it myself, 3) do nothing.

There are many walk though's ,  I believe from VWatchie or HLS on the very subject of dissasembly and re assembly. Have a look via the search facility or contact the members via the PM system,  I am sure they will be able to point you in the right direction.

I found this disassembly and reassembly.  Wow.  Also found another video discussing the "well known" problem that NickelSilver noted above.  Geez...I bet I was not being careful when winding it.  Damn.  Oh well, gonna have to ponder this for a while.

Hi what you must remember when doing any dismantling work is to photo each stage it will give you a record of what you did and where the parts all fit, memory is a fickle thing.

AMEN to that brother!!!  I have been doing that, albeit a little carelessly.  Gonna be very detail oriented going forward.  In the video posted, the watchmaker noted returning screws to their position after removing respective parts--so as not to get screws and their locations confused.  This is very clever, I think.

I ordered the part today.  Still not certain I will attack it, but at least I will have the part on hand for me, or a skilled watchmaker.

    • Hello watch enthusiasts, I'm encountering a peculiar issue with my Seiko 4006 movement and could use some advice. Specifically, the alarm bolt yoke doesn't function properly when I tighten the screw on the calendar plate directly above it. This results in the alarm not functioning as it should. However, when I leave the screw loose, everything works perfectly and alarm bolt yoke is functional as should be. I've tried replacing the alarm bolt yoke, the alarm bolt yoke spring, and even the calendar plate itself, but unfortunately, none of these changes have made a difference. The only workaround I've found is to keep the screw on top of the alarm bolt yoke loose. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue or have any insights on what might be causing this? I'll also be sharing pictures to help illustrate the problem. Looking forward to your suggestions and advice! TT
    • Some news. After screws removal from donor movement, a family shot. From left to right: original (broken) screws new screws purchased from Cousins UK, as "Slava 2428 clamp screws", that didn't fit. They actually & definitively look too large screws removed from donor 2428 movement Here we go! First one is in position: Let's continue on the other side: Done! Next step will be putting back the hands. Another discovery for me! I keep going ...
    • OK, I have been there many times and know several solutions. As I believe, the pinion (the part with the leaves ) is on the other side of the arbor, yes? If so, then there is easy way to solve the problem. You can grind from one side as shown on the drawing with dremel tool. This will allow to push out the broken drill bit easy from inside. Then You will be able to insert new pivot and then You can solder it in place and in the same time to fill the ground portion with solder. Of course, I mean solder for PCBs, but not the led free one - use led containing solder, the led free solder which is offered in common hardware stores is for idiots.
