What Glue Or Cement Is Recommended For Old Glass Pocket Watch Crystals

Recommended Posts

I have tried many different ones but still can't seem to get a good bond. The G-S Hypo Cement is made for plastic crystals, not glass. The UV glue is made for mineral and doesn't work on the old glass crystals. I have even tried flowing super glue in the crystal groove of the bezel and it doesn't seem to get a bond either. Can anyone recommend anything? Thanks.

Hi Jeff, Maybe changing the crystal so the glue works? It may also be a better solution considering new crystals are more durable/safe...just a thought. I myself don't have much experience with pocket watches other than to disassemble them to use the movements....Hopefully you'll get more suggestions as the real pros chip in.

Cheers,

Bob

PS. Welcome!

Welcome to the forum Jeff. I've fitted a couple of glass pocket watch crystals, and a glass wrist watch crystal using G-S Hypo cement and it has worked very well. The excess cement also cleans off easily with alcohol and gives an excellent result.

Thanks for the input. Bob, this is a new glass crystal. The customer is wanting glass over plastic. I have had this problem in the past and have tried G-S Hypo cement many times and it just doesn't seem to bond. I have a clean bezel as well as crystal but still does not seem to bond. I bought a new tube of G-S cement and was told that this is for plastic crystals not glass. I have not tried the epoxy so I will give that a try. Again, thanks for the input and if anyone else has any recommendations, I am all ears.

Sincerely,

Jeff Broughton

Hi, I've had some success with UV glue then nicking my wife's UV nail polish setting thingy (few quid off eBay) then putting the case in it.

Failing that, evo-stik serious glue generally works:post-687-0-59138300-1423701110.jpg

I should try heating the case & filling the groove with shellac but I've never got round to it :)
