If it was a pocket watch sometimes overenthusiastic lubrication of the mainspring causes something like this to happen as it leaks out.

Then it used to be watchmakers especially those into production would use a novel lubrication method. It was usually dissolved in the last rinse of the watch cleaning fluid and went by a variety of names. So basically your nice clean watch would go to the final rinse with lubrication all over everything, oh and the watch was not disassembled it was run complete minus hopefully the calendar parts. Conveniently doesn't seem to exist anymore but here's an example for clock people at the link below.
