One thing really important when you're new to watch repair is not to jump to conclusions unless you really grasp what you're doing. Then there is a website out there if you have a serial number from American pocket watch and know who made the watch you can go there and find something like this https://pocketwatchdatabase.com/search/result/waltham/14917225 Then you get a description including they hairspring is a Breguet. Very carefully formed at the factory to an a very exacting shaap which is most definitely not flat. As some images showing over coil type hairspring. The blue one is from a Waltham and you could see how nicely the curve is formed. The really shiny one it's hard to get a picture because the spring is to shiny and is picking up reflections of the balance wheel giving the spring a weird look is a Hamilton 992B. You could see where basically if you tried the flap the hairspring it be a waste of time because the stud would line up where it's supposed to be. Hairspring would never reach the regulator pins. This is where the picture you had it would've been better to have a picture from the other side except we already knew what it was. Most later American pocket watches will use a spring of this type the early ones typically are flat at those are really early.

Hi everybody, I'm a guy from Canada in his late 30's that got into watches during the pandemic, you have to find something to do while staying at home, eh? I started by restoring badly beaten cases by meticulously trying to keep all the edges and original design. Slowly by slowly I got dragged deeper and deeper into the watchmaking black hole and felt the need to be part of a community I'm also a product designer so I design and sketch a lot of watches in my free time. We keep talking about the Chinese gov.t and how it influences industrial production but the fact is that most Chinese industries are largely privately or publicly owned. That enabled them to succeed unlike the ones in other Communist countries, and made many individuals exceedingly rich. Can't imagine the Communist part having a say about how a non-strategic factory like e.g. mechanical watches is run. If it does good all is well if it does not they will let it sink period. In my opinion if Chinese product quality and business practices are poor that is due to greed, pretty like it happens in capitalist and democratic counties.

Now that you mention it, I was looking to buy a used gauge on eBay and noticed that most seem to have missing jewels, and despite this fact, the seller is demanding hundreds of dollars. WT*? I suppose if one had a drill press. a piece or flat stock of the correct thickness, and a jeweling tool, you would be better off making one.

I think we should stop categorizing the Chinese people. Every human being has pretty much the same goals and dreams regardless of what regime runs their lives.

All, Thanks for the help. I apologize for taking so long to close the loop. It turns out that there were several areas on the barrel with broken teeth. I replaced the barrel and mainspring and the watch is running quite well, or as well as can be expected for a 1970's one jewel movement.... v/r

If the M/s is weak have a look at fitting a generic spring. Cousins and the US material houses will carry the GR range.

I’m also working on the new 41mm case. Wanted opinions on whether the bezel is too high? I like the profile but think it needs to be half a millimetre lower. I’m trying to really show off the high dome acrylic crystal.
