Latest Incoming Project : Chrono

Recommended Posts

I'm a sucker for vintage chronographs, here's another one to work on and add to my collection.

From the looks of it it needs a new mainspring. Never worked on this movement before, its a valjoux 92. Looking forward to working on it :)

I came across an O&W chrono with Valjoux 92 via a friends garage drawer!!!  Had only just started dabling in watches at the time so didn't want to take it on and persuaded him to sell on ***y and it eventually fetched nearly £300!   It needed some work like, new minute counter wheel and hand, stem, bezel etc.  Wish I'd blagged it from him now!

I believe O&W (Ollech & Wajs) bought all the original Heuer stock when they went bust.

I read a book by Donald de Carle called Complicated Watches and Their Repair which I believe used the Valjoux 92 as his representative movement.  Certainly there were some good tips in it, especialy what screws NOT to unscrew/move!!  I borrowed it from my local library!

Lovely looking watch jnash.

Make sure you take heaps of pics while your stripping and assembling mate.

......You know Bobm12 and me need our fix :startle: , and I'm starting to think Geo is an addict as well: he's starting to show all the symptoms.

    • Hi John, The most important parameter of the spring is the thickness. The lenght is something that one would not consider as obligatory, as relatively big variations will not affect anything in significant way. The barrel size is related to the barrel and has nothing to do with the spring. Yes, the spring is designed to work in a barrel and the size of the barrel matters, but let this parameter be chosen by the movement manyfacturer, not by the sping manyfacturer who doesn't have idea in what kind of movement the spring will work. Sometimes the washer in which the spring arrives will be bigger than the barrel and there will be no way to just push the spring in the barrel and be happy. Well, if this is a problem for somebody, then probably He is a person with to many problems that will be verry hard to help to in any way. By the way, why You are changing the spring? Is the old one broken?

    • As a beginner, I’ve found this forum invaluable. I doubt I would’ve persevered without its support. I’ve had the confidence to attempt things that seemed to me impossible only because I knew there were patient and giving folks gathered around this watering hole, available to share their skill.    I would very much like to know where to go if this one dries up and everyone needs to decamp.  There’s something special about the folks gathered in this group.  How to keep in touch?
