Hello,\

Thanks for all the help in getting this one out of the case and in letting the mainspring down. this is another first time for me, as I've not done a Japanese watch. it was a good experience!

Here goes:

The movement has just been cleaned at this point. This watch was running but had previously been over-oiled

and the hands...

Unfortunately the recasing gets me at a bad time and I struggle wit the tiny crown/stem replacement and lose some of the lume from the minute hand in the process...oh well.

All in all a good learning experience,. I didn't realize it, butthis Seiko does not have a way to hand-wind because there is no crown wheel (winding pinion) that engages intermediate wheel to wind the barrel. All autowinding on this one.

Good job and great experience for you Joe.

You're correct, it is an auto only, but you can wind it with a screwdriver before installing the auto mechanism to aid fitting the balance and also check that all is well.

Nice work, is it a Seikosha 2451/Seiko 6601? Got a couple of these as Seiko Sportsmatics, excellent timekeepers. As far as I can tell the vast majority of Seiko autos are non hand winding with the exception of the 4xxx series.

Great job JC, and good experience gained! By the way, apart from the dirt, extra oil, etc, it is of note that Seiko uses a black lubricant for the mainspring. Maybe this model had some...it would look like dirt.

Hello. Thanks for the comments. I think it is a Seiko 2451 because I sw a Seiko sportmatic with an identical looking dial and movement details and the description said the movement was 2451. Its a good loking watch and runs well. I wore it yesterday. Pretty soon I am going to put all of my overhauls on Ebay to get an Omega manual-wind Speedmaster>

Very nice! Awesome! JC are you cleaning by hand? Thank you for sharing! Looking forward to the next one!

Yes I do everything by hand. I have a large desk that is occupied with diferent little glass jars filled with Naptha. I give an initial soak (maybe 10-15 minutes), and then a rinse in clean naptha. For more difficult dirt on top and bottom plates I take it to the sink and gently wash it with dawn detergent and an old soft toothbrush. After that I dry it and do another dunk in fresh naptha to get rid ao any residual water. Sometimes I hit the bigger parts with compressed air froma can to dry them faster. Its not too bad and I can do a watch every two days--Mostly late at night. And that's with all the other trappings of life!
