Hello,

I want to ask for input on a watch I recently overhauled. It is a Bulova Manual wind, 17 jewels:

Now, the problem is the watch is speeding along at 10-15 minutes fast per 6-8 hours. The sound of the pallets hitting the escape wheel is also weird in the sense that it does not have the steadiness I am familiar with even though it is ticking strong--but too fast as I've said. I suspect the balance has become magnetized or was already magnetized when I got it, I'm not sure. Is there a way to test for this, and of course, what is the solution! Do I buy a Chinese degausser from Ebay? Anyone have experience with this? I have removed the balance/hairspring about 4 times for cleaning in One-Dip and afterward. The shape looks fine when its laying on paper but as soon as I put it in the hairspring assumes a tight configuration. I'll try to put some pictures of this later...Gracias.

I use one of the Chinese degaussing units myself and it works just fine, I recommend that you get one.

I had the same problem with a Seiko 6139.  A couple of passes of the complete movement sorted it out.  I also used a cheap degausser.  You can also use any mains electric item if you get the right position, in an emergency I have used an electric soldering gun in the past (just be careful you don't put the hot tip to themovement!!).  Hold movement as near as possible, hold for 2-3 secs then draw away slowly as far as you can within 10-15 secs.

Hello,

Thanks for the input. I will get the Degausser in hopes that it will remedy. The sound is more like a fast trotting horse. I can really describe it except to say its as if the stress is being placed on the wrong syllable when hearing someone speak--you hear and understand the word fine but it sounds odd. I can't say it has a lop-sidedness to it so maybe I described it incorrectly when I said its beat didn't have the stadniness I normally hear. It is a very fast beat and that is what I mean.
