I have just serviced an old watch which has no roller jewel and no pallets. The make is unknown, all I can find is the letter "B" and the word "Calot".

The balance felt as though it had excessive end shake so stripped it down and oiled the end jewel on the top of the balance bridge. No improvement. Pinion is all ok. Runs ok face down, stops when dial up....... any solutions.

Also do you need to lubricate the oddly shaped escape wheel.

Pics of the balance and escape wheel below...................

What you have there is a cylinder escapement.

As for running face down but not face up the first thing to check is the balance pivots. If there is excessive end shake then it could be that one or other pivot is broken short which would cause the balance stall shoulder to contact the hole jewel when face up. That would stop the watch.

Then also check the hair spring for sufficient clearance from the cock as that may be making contact when face up.

That's definateky an old cylinder escapement you have there Kieth, And it certainly does need lubricated. Be very careful when reassembling it, you can quite easily break an end off the escape wheel arms.

Thanks guys.......... took off the balance again and had a look under a 20x loupe and it does look as though the very tip of the pivot has snapped off.

With no distinguishing marks I don't think I'll have much joy finding one on the interweb.......

Destined for bits and bobs I suppose...... :(

Sorry to hear that! Maybe with time one can be sourced.

Sourced one at £7. Told it was really hit and miss replacing these as they are a bit thin and hollow. so movement only cost me £1.50 so I think it's destined for spares...........
