Barrel w/out pry hole

Hi

Any advice on how to take a barrel off that has no little hole to help pry off the top plate?

I rarely use the holes. On a hard surface I press down just above the gear teeth using my thumbnails. The top usually just pops off.

Ditto on not using the holes.  There is potential to distort the lid and the fit of the lid will suffer.
