You are just using the calipers as a datum stick...though adjustable. You could actually using anything to fit the space , that will give you a guide to work to. A thin piece of metal filed to size, a staight piece of old mainspring. A scratch mark on his thumbnail perhaps. -

You can remove the plating using a rotary tool and a bristle wheel. Don't forget the slot. I would do away with the pot and the shavings. Drill a hole in the tip of the soldering iron, and drop the screw in there, head upwards. Then you have direct control over the screw temperature, and it will be evenly distributed. I've done it this way with good results, but the colour change is fairly rapid. -
This has to be the answer (nickel-plated). Nothing else makes sense. I'll try to find a more appropriate container. My next thought was to have a heavier insulated brass pot. That will take some heating, but then it should be very stable and hopefully will stop the heat loss.
