Number Of Winds In A Mainspring

Recommended Posts

It's always interesting to see how different watch movements require different numbers of complete wind revolutions to get the mainspring up from totally unwound to totally wound. Some watches - like my Hamilton with its ETA 6497 movement - seem to wind for ever, while some seem to become fully wound very quickly.

Is there a ratio between mainspring length and gearing - or is the size and capacity of the mainspring barrel more arbitrary? Some of my US railroad watches are just over 40 hours in capacity, while one or two - like my Illinois "Bunn Special" are 60 hours.
